10 Scientific Ideas That Scientists Wish You Would Stop Misusing
Some interesting ones here. I'm sure that we all fall foul of misusing certain terms but I've found the misunderstanding or misrepresentation of science by certain theists - particularly creationists - rather exasperating.
  • Proof
  • Theory
  • Quantum Uncertainty and Quantum Weirdness
  • Learned Vs Innate
  • Natural
  • Gene
  • Statistically significant
  • Survival of the fittest
  • Geologic timescales
  • Organic

Hope this article makes you think.

This one pisses me off. I have had people ask me when I tell them my field whether I am involved with the food.

* climate vs weather
* probability
* statistics in general

It never fails in a conversation that people misunderstand the 10 terms/ideas from the article, plus a variety of others.

I really hate the "natural" one, and it goes along with "organic." Why are things that humans do, not considered "natural?" Aren't we a fucking part of nature?

Mmmm, organic vegetables covered in every naturally derived pesticide known to man...

Everybody from Samuel Hahnemann to Deepak Chopra, Richard Hoagland, Gary Schwartz, Charles Berlitz, Dean Radin et al have claimed that "quantum mechanics" in its various forms somehow explains the inexplicable. It's like "we don't understand, so QM"... (the god of the gaps in scientific clothing?)

I'm a creationist... I believe that man created God.

If I had to pick the one that irritates me the most it would be this one. We aren’t talking about an individual goddamn it, we’re talking about an entire species best adapted to its environment.

All I get are glazed looks when I try to point this out.

The definition of proof as many of those who misuse it, really falls under the term when it is used regarding math alone. Math is rather tidy in that regard.

When I saw theory, I thought of when people say, "Evolution is just a theory." They mean it in the way people use it when they say things like, "I have a theory. Maybe blah blah blah...." That's not how it's used in science, though. I wish more people understood that.

The idea that there's a "left brain/right brain" dominance is a myth.
