10 animal misconceptions I have seen or heard
10. Spotted Hyenas are hermaphrodites

Fact: they aren't. Female Hyenas have a genitalia similar in looks but both function completely different

9.In america robins are a sign of spring

Fact: The american robin can be a sign of spring, but can also be a sign of winter to some states. Also some areas they live in year round

8.Dolphins will fight off sharks

Fact: This is only partially true, however dolphins will flee when they see a dangerous bull shark

7.Mammal like Reptiles are reptiles

Fact: Synapsids are not reptiles, in fact they only share a common ancestor with Sauropsida

6. All animals need oxygen

Fact: Some members of the phylum Loricifera can live entire lives without light and oxygen

5.Owls are wise

Fact: Owls are alright, but relative to other birds this animal is pretty stupid

4.Blue whales are bigger then the largest dinosaur

Fact: This is true in weight, however in length the blue whale is beaten by dinosaurs like amphicoelias, which is said to have been 130-200 feet.

Fact: The spider known as Bagheera Kiplingi feeds on a mostly herbivorous diet, feeding on Beltain bodies

2. Pandas only eat bamboo

Fact: Pandas mostly eat bamboo, they have been known to eat meat, like fish, and even cockroaches

Fact: We aren't many animals like cockroaches have us beat.

But I HATE it when people call Orcas "killer whales"

They are killers. In fact its scientific name orcinus orca means killer from hell. So it is either a whale or a hellspawn.

Actually, calling an Orca a whale is not incorrect.

The Orca is in the dolphin family, but all dolphins are whales, and not all whales are dolphins.

The ruling family name for whales, dolphins and porpoises is cetacea, the key here.

IT"S really "par for the course" on this one as the taxonomy remains in controversy.

That was ever a misconception?

My dad still tries to argue for it when caught with his defences lowered. He was taught there were three kingdoms: plants, animals and humans. He knows better now, but deep down he still thinks we're special somehow.
Call it bad education, but some people still actually believe it.
