10 commandments is a pretty good idea.. (philosofical excersice)
(I had some trouble coming up exactly where to post this but it seems fairly well in there in moral philosophy.. As a practical exercise.)

10 commandments is a pretty good idea..
Not the biblical ones per say... not even 10 per say..

But i recently had the idea that writing your own independently and sharing them with outs might be a very good basis for some quite interesting discussions on morality...

For me as a programmer i view morality a bit like a generic class...
A generic class is basically an object you can instance with a special type like a List

List<Person> is a list of person objects... so to is it with morality i believe...
What you value determines what you actually get out as a moral framework and 10ish commandments makes for a pretty good way of getting a basic idea of what people value.

Plus it always fun to write in ye oldy bible speak X3

Anyway here is mine at this point of my life
(Additionally it might make some sense to store these and rewrite them over the years as a way of seeing how your view evolve)

•Thau shall preserve and treasure thy world for it is your cradle and home in a hostile universe a rare pearl of life in a desert of death.

•Thau shalt not act without self-understanding and the best understanding that is appropriate to acquire in the moment.

•Thau shalt judge no human as anything less or more than a human thy law must well and truly blind.

•Thau shalt not seek to subvert democracy through discriminatory laws aimed at opposing groups or through false votes or tampering with the process of law

•Thau shalt not abuse such powers and responsibilities allotted to you and thau shalt heed thy oaths to thy people

•Thau Shalt not Kill except as is required for food or escaping urgent danger to self or others within reasonable societal limits and without actively seeking out danger and in so doing endangering others except those appointed to enforce the law or protect their nation.

•Thau shalt not Rape and thau shalt both be consenting adults in a legal state of mind during the sex act both taking due care and responsibility for the act.

•Thau shalt not steal or vandalize thy fellow human’s possessions

(Caviat only valid untill we find other inteligent life or build artifical life that is sentient... then this will need some rewording)

Granted I take the position that morality is subjective, so having absolute rules doesn't work. There are a few things that are never ok, in any situation though. Rape is always wrong, Child molestation or abuse is always wrong, other than that almost everything could be justified.

I've said it a hundred times. I only need one commandment:

1. Don't be a dick.

Done.

1. Think things through for yourself
2. embrace change and diversity
3. mind your own business
4. Live, learn & love

BTW: these are not commandments, they are mere suggestions, one of the many possible approaches one could take. Under no circumstances is adherence to these suggestions to be enforced (pay attention Fundamentalists, I know who you are, I'm watching you!)

Be - excellent, to each other.

That seems sufficient, no?

I like Stark's commandment.

In lieu of that I do rather like what Hitchens said.

Wind's in the east, a mist coming in
Like something is brewing and about to begin
Can't put my finger on what lies in store
but I feel what's to happen has happened before...
