Unfortunly the idea that the super nova is going to be bright as the sun is fiction.

Yeah the 2012 crap I dismissed as soon as I saw. Even if it did go off in 2012 it wouldn't cause anything bad.

Even if it might not rival the sun, it might rival the moon in brightness, according to this article which Phil linked to in his blog

Edit: And that is pretty awesome.

We'll just wait and see.
Still , I'd feel more comfortable if this was coming from a journal of astronomy or NASA or someone with more credibility - once an idea gets into the hands of the press it gets modified , a lot;especially when it comes to science.

It's a very interesting prediction and I would LOVE to see it happen, but I'm not betting on it.
If it does come around, though, I'll be celebrating in one way or another, I couldn't even imagine
how amazing it would look to have two suns in the sky (and one of them harmless, if I read the
article properly...). I've always imagined how exciting it would be to have a different looking sky
for a while, a nice change from the norm.

RE: 2 Suns in the sky
The Idea was a pun. Any star can be referred to as a "Sun" Therefore, if an article referrers to Betelgeuse going Super Nova as a second SUN; it actually is. As far as how bright it will be, The Brightest possible estimate from astronomers was "100 Full Moons", and the most conservative was "As bright as the full Moon". I've been following the "Betelgeuse" story for years now; my guess (And anticipation), is that it will turn our night sky to a Twilight state for an unknown period of time. (Hours, Days or weeks).

Whatever the case, I hope it happens in my lifetime! It will be a Spectacular Sight!

The Beauty of The Scientific Method , is the Anticipation of a Better Explanation.

Can a super nova be accurately predicted? If so, how?

There are Signs as Betelgeuse is showing. But "Any time Now" could be today or a thousand years from now.

That could be great to watch, I hope it happens while I'm still alive, I remember the solar eclipse I saw back in 1991 here in Mexico, hehe I was 7 years old, and the Hale-Bop Comet back in 1998 I think, I want to see something like a super-nova turning the night sky into some kind of twilight sky for a couple of days or something like that. Peace.
