8 states won't let an Atheist hold any public office
Wanna be a mayor? Judge? Do you live in Arkansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas? Are you an Atheist? Well, you cannot be if you live in any of the aforementioned states and you are an Atheist.

Yep - amazing huh?

Not that it makes a difference, none of them would survive a legal challenge, but annoying nevertheless...

According too an 1960s supreme court case all those laws are illegal. They are officially not enforceable.

Massachusetts??? WTF? That's like saying infidelity isn't allowed in Vegas!

I gotta think that these are as relevant as anti-sodomy laws. Unconstitutional.

RE: 8 states won't let an Atheist hold any public office
What with all the atheist activism of late, especially by the younger front who sue their schools to remove religious inference banners that have hung for decades, and the billboard and bus ad campaigns, etc... We need to get active in those States and levy class action lawsuits to have those BS laws repealed, because they are indeed illegal and unenforceable, because they're unconstitutional.

Either that or go on the cheap first, by making an appointment to address the matter before the Legislature, or the State's supreme court and simply bring to their attention what they already know. While bringing the press along for the ride, so they can cover what would promise to be a headline making event!!
Atheists, demanding their right to enter political office by first demanding repeal of illegal prohibitions against the opportunity!
Article VI, Section III
The No Religious Test Ban Clause (Separation clause)

I don't live in any of those States, or bet I'd give it a shot. I've done it before when unconstitutional laws prohibited freedom of religious expression. Might as well go for the mirror opposite, just to even things out. Tongue
