All of these usages fit into two previously known categories.

1. Shooting for fun (rifle club, competition, training, etc.)
2. Shooting to kill (hunting, military, self-defense, etc.)

If you only plan on using your firearm for the first option, there is no need for you to have it at home, since you're only going to use it at specific places where the gun can be stored safely. And if it's the second one, well, that's what's being criticized. There really aren't "many" uses for gun, you either use them to eliminate life or for the entertainment value.
