After Katrina the govt declared marshal law and confiscated all the citizens guns. No one decided to let them pry the weapons from their cold dead hands oddly enough. Turns out that boisterous bullies really are just a bunch of cowardly pusses.

So if a tyrannical govt can easily confiscate your weapons, which it can, then the 2nd amendment seems to have lost its purpose.

RE: 9,146 gun homicides in US. 16,885 killed by drunk drivers.
If the point of the 2nd amendment is for the people to be able to
overthrow an unjust government, then isn't restricting those things a
violation?

Don't get me wrong, I do agree that was the point of the 2nd amendment. I
also understand that over time most of the bill of rights has collided
with other parts of the constitution (particularly the "general welfare"
clause of article 1) and it has been up to courts to weigh which part
of the constitution has precedent when two parts conflict. The idea that
the 2nd amendment, and only the 2nd amendment, is absolute is one I
don't buy into. I also think assault rifles are an area where the
"General Welfare" clause would win out.

We have tried gun control here and it has failed. That is mainly because
the gun lobby makes sure it is so full of holes that it cannot work.
Australia implemented an assault weapons ban in 1996 and hasn't had a
single mass shooting since. Australians still enjoy their freedom, they
still hunt and shoot. They just do it with more modest weapons

You are functionally fucked if you think armed citizens where the "bullies" in katrina. Keep in mind, most of the guns that where taken from people who didnt have the will nor means to leave, IE SAVE THEIR OWN LIFE.

You claim that ALL their guns where taken, which is false. They didn't have the man power left to even do that, which is why they had to call in dudes from Blackwater to make a presence and deter looting. But hey, if you think shitting on the constitution and hiring contractors who have no legal expectation to follow and uphold it is cool, Obama sounds like your dude.

The 2nd amendment already lost it's purpose when the National Guard was established.

Nope.

The National Guard is the reserve branch of the US Army, which is why state units mobilize to war zones. They don't report in with a personal rifle, and they arnt very well regulated LOLBig Grin.

The framers didnt want a large, free standing army which would go to war at the directive or the crown despite the disdain of the people. If a cause was truly worth going to war for, then the state would be agreeably amassing enough bodies to conduct war.

Good thing all our wars have been fully justified.Confused

RE: 9,146 gun homicides in US. 16,885 killed by drunk drivers.
Because when you make comparisons between things, you compare things that are similar. Aka, we don't do drug trials on fungi as a means of evaluating their benefit to humans and comparing developing and third world nations to first world nations is on par with that.

So the point still seems to be this conspiracy that the government wants to disarm us. There are plenty of politicians advocating for the pro-gun lobby. Mainly on the conservative side. You know, the same well-educated folks advocating other great ideas like education reformed designed to allow the teaching of ID?

Evolve

What makes you think I did? Bush wanted to re-enstate the "AWB" as well, but he didnt act on it. He and Obama will continue to enjoy protection with full auto, STANDARD capacity firearms while claiming us common folk have no need for such evil machines.

Hey, dude, I'm not arguing with you - just pointing out that you can't pin the Katrina shit on Obama.

I just returned from a gun show - people were lined up out the door. The prices for everything are up.
