A distinction without a difference?
I once made the statement in a forum that an atheist was a person that did not believe in God.

I then was told by a member of said forum that I was wrong and that an atheist was a person that lacked belief in gods or God.

My question is:

Is this not a distinction without a difference?

Or, in OTW, was I not right when I said an atheist is a person that does not believe in God?

RE: A distinction without a difference?
You are correct, it's not a meaningful distinction.

They may have misunderstood and thought you were claiming atheist means someone who believes god does not exist.

Jesus is my Stalker: He has graced me with his unconditional love, but if I reject it and refuse to love him in return, he will make my life Hell.

This. Very few atheists will say outright that there is no way a deity of any kind could exist.

The person trying to correct you probably thought that's what you meant.

I hope that the world turns, and things get better. But what I hope most of all is that you understand what I mean when I tell you that, even though I do not know you, and even though I may never meet you, laugh with you, cry with you, or kiss you, I love you. With all my heart, I love you. - V for Vendetta

RE: A distinction without a difference?
I would basically say you were correct.

I'd go something like....
Atheist is someone who does not believe in gods.... true
Atheist is someone who lacks belief in gods... true
Atheist is someone who believes gods do not exist... false

Not quite.

Atheist is someone who believes gods do no exist....true
Atheist is someone who has certainty that gods do not exist...false

The latter would be defined as a gnostic atheist. They claim to know that God does not exist.

I have never personally spoken with one but they are out there.

RE: A distinction without a difference?
I do not know for certain any god exists or ever existed.

I do know the god of the bible was made up by men -- just like all the other religions.

I don't know what that makes me.

Agnostic gnostic atheist??
