Is it just fantasy or is that the time frames are too optimistic?

He argues, quite reasonably I think and supported by the rate of technological advance in just the last decade, that technology advances at an exponential rate. It's hard for us to intuit that if we start with a penny and double it everyday for a month we'd have north of $10 trillion. I'm not sure his ETA for the singularity is overly optimistic.

Have real trouble typing atm due to inflammation in neck pressing on sensory fibres. Will get back to this when I recover. Can't even sign my name or use a knife or fork properly anymore.

North of 10 trillion? Consider

0.01 x 2 = 0.02, repeat that another 30 times, and I got 21,474,836.48

You'd need 8 more days to get to 11,258,999,068,426.24, or in excess of 11 trillion.

Did I miss something, or has public education really let me down? Gasp

No. I can't count digits. Point remains.

RE: AI Learning To Make Other AI
Once again Wozniak, the Forrest Gump of high-tech, has the only reasonable position.

Steve Wozniak has wondered publicly whether he is destined to be a family pet for robot overlords. “We started feeding our dog filet,” he told me about his own pet, over lunch with his wife, Janet, at the Original Hick’ry Pit, in Walnut Creek. “Once you start thinking you could be one, that’s how you want them treated.”

Wozniak was great at creating computers back in the 70ies, but he's talking shit here. How much processing power do you think something like that needs? How much energy? All contained in a handy package that's able to move around without at least refueling itself.

It has to be able to form the desire of being an independent entity and still has to work with the hard- and software limitations we impose. More than that, for that to become a reality, it has to form a society, creating it's energy, it's spare parts and to run their own maintanance. How the fuck should something like that pan out? Are we to support the creation of such a robot or AI society? Do we grant them land and access to our own energy to do that?

Right now that nothing even resembling an AI is even on the horizon, this is all moot. But even if there were something like that, the above would be the most basic steps to take before any of these nightmare scenarios are even remotely possible.

I think bio-integrated augmented intelligence will come first. I think it's practically here as soon as soon as Apple starts making cranial iPhone implants.

Well, let's wait for that to happen or to even be on the distant horizon. Let's talk about the dangers then.
