My Dad: "I just think it's all bullshit."'
I know, very lucky. I love my Dad.

My Mom was raised kinda Mormon. She went to church with her Grandparents and pretty much believed but she never went to church as an adult, until she married my Step-Dad. He took us to Christian church for a couple of years, but not one bit of it seeped in.

Because of the Mormon ancestors, I've always been curious about the church.

When the Mormon's dumped all the money and influence into the California Prop 8 fight, and ripped marriage away from the Gay folk, I decided I needed to take a closer look and see how to fight this. So I started reading and listening to podcasts.

Mormonism is totally nuts! I'd say I'm having a blast learning all the weird shit about the founding of the church, but it is still gaining members, and gay Mormon boys are still committing suicide.

That is was really set me off. When I found out how many Gay Mormon kids kill themselves because they think they are broken, I decided I needed to be educated and be able to talk intelligently with religious people to help them leave the "Faith" behind and go forward with Reason.

And now I'm here. Hi! Smile

Welcome Handyman.

Hello, and welcome. Shy

Teaching the religious to use reason sounds a lot more difficult than teaching the young that there isn't anything wrong with them! But if you beat some logic into more than 2 or 3 of em, we'll give ya a medal, or sumthin. Tongue

ASL? American Sign Language? That's what I think of.

And yeah, the Mormons are pretty high up there on the screwed up scale.

I thought that might come up. Smile I've taken beginning ASL a couple of times.

Learning about the beliefs of Mormons was one of the first stepping stones that led to my de-conversion from xtianity. It really is fascinating stuff.

Mormons seem to be really into self-imposed repression when it comes to LGBT issues. Every <quote>Pro LGBT</quote> Mormon video I've seen on Youtube is basically like "I love my life! *forced smile* I've been a gay man my whole life, but I have a wonderful wife and kids, just like God willed for me *forced smile*", or "I'm gay, but it's totally cool, because I can just be celibate and single for the rest of my life! Praise Jesus!! *forced smile*"
It's really sad to see Undecided

It is really horrible. If they'd watch the movie "Making Love" they'd realize a gay guy marrying a straight girl rarely works out. For the woman it is riding in a car with a drunk driver not even wearing a seatbelt. Just don't do it. It isn't going to end well.

Hiya SFH. Having lived in SoCal for a long time, including the Prop 8 campaign, I came to realize with that bitter blow that LGBT and atheist communities, such as they are, are natural allies -- after all, we're the two major groups against whom bigotry is not only accepted but praised in many quarters.

It matters to me because my son's mom is a bisexual in a long-term gay relationship who were denied marriage on that basis. Sad to say, although I've always been in favor of LGBT rights, it never really hit home for me until 08 when it affected deeply the life of someone I love and cherish.

Unlike you, I couldn't be bothered to learn the ins and outs of Mormonism. I don't study the Star Trek universe, either. For me, after seeing the massive amount of money the LDS poured into that campaign, it stiffened my resolve to support the separation clause more vocally.

Welcome to the forum, bud. Pull up a chair and settle in.

I can't believe how many people online don't know what "ASL" stands for.....

Guess they probably don't know what a modem hookup sounds like either...
