About porn
First, a confession...
I like porn! It turns me on. No need to make excuses about that...
I like to watch others get off and I watch it regularly just for pleasure.

There, I said it. I feel relieved... Smile

Let's skew the topic a bit...

Some hundred years ago, the gene-pool out of witch you choose to get into a (sexual) relation with was rather small. Mainly it consisted out of the boys/girls from your village or neighbourhood. Once into that relation, there was the rest of the village/neighbourhood to compare your partner with.
"well, Emmy might have a sexier smile then my Bertha, but Bertha is so sweet."

Nowadays, we see a lot more of the world. We meet much more people in life then the average of 100 years ago. An then I am only talking about REAL people we meet.

Enter television and internet.
Every day my male retina gets bombarded with incredibly attractive people. Mostly photoshopped or at least seriously worked on by stylists with the correct clothing and matching make up. This is just no fair to my perception on how sexy my own wife can be.

Even more. From time to time I subject myself voluntarily to some good juicy porn. Good-looking woman and girls with unsatisfiable lust for men and their hardened body parts. How does that impact my perception on the sexual skills of own wife.

Sure, I can rationalise. I know this is fake! I know the woman on TV is made over. I know the girl on the video is probably only handling 2 men at the same time because she got payment for it.

Does my subconscious know this as well? Is my reptilian brain ready for a life with more sexual stimuli then ever before in the history of mankind?

I clearly understand that there is a market for porn and that this market not only has a place in economics but also in society. I often use porn as a way to "blow some steam" (pun intended). Often together with my wife. Sometimes we try the stuff we've seen and then realise it is often so unpractical that we laugh ourself silly! We also realise that, while we are very curious about it, engaging into activities with a third person is opening a box of Pandora with all kind of mixed feelings about jealousy or regrets. So we keep that box closed. Do other people realise this as well?

I wonder how future generations will coop with the ever expanding flow of information that bombards their lives? Especially that kind of information that plugs directly into your subconscious.

Any thoughts?

RE: About porn
I have a sister who used to work in the magazine industry. Being a typical American woman she was very body conscious. Then she got to see what models went through to look the way they did. They did not eat, they smoked to suppress their appetites, and when they went to shoots they would have their breasts sometimes taped up with duct tape under their clothes to make sure they looked sufficiently "perky". And, most of them had very, very short careers and a lot of them had health and emotional problems when they were through. My sister was probably still somewhat self conscious about the fact that she didn't look like the women in magazines and TV after that, but dramatically less so. She did not envy these girls at all.

I think the point is that real people look like real people, not the people you see on TV. Real people don't have the time to spend 4 hours a day in the gym with a personal trainer and have someone monitor everything they eat to make sure they keep their physique. If you expect your partner to look like the girl or guy in the video or the magazine, then you're going to have a lot of disappointments.

As for porn, nothing wrong with it. I'm not a big porn watcher, but I've watched (and watch it) and have watched it with my wife. I think our joint view is that it can be fun to watch and imitate from time to time but that is not our real lives.

And, for your question about future generations, who knows. I think kids will learn to handle it and process information. I will say, though, that it has been both mine and my wife's observation that people in their early 20s that are first starting out in the world have some serious problems with person-to-person communications. I think the inability to maintain focus or to carry a conversation is going to be a real problem for the younger generations. (wow, listen to me. Man, did I get old).

RE: About porn
According to my latest study (which I presented to a conference yesterday and got booed for having the word "causal" instead of "correlational" in the title :dodgySmile porn is more than a social aspect or an industry. Apparently, watching porn (and, well... jacking off to it) can help you overcome symptoms of generalized anxiety and make you less socially and interpersonally intimidated. On the other hand, watching porn seems to be feeding off many of the depressive symptoms -some individuals that lack the skills or ability to socialize- might have.

Those two being said, porn makes one more competent in engaging in social or interpersonal activities but also subtracts one's motivation to actually engage in them in the first place.

Sick, isn't it? Sleepy

@Celestus
Wait... Let me get this straight In layman's terms...

What you are actually saying is that masturbating while watching porno on a regular basis is actually good for my emotional and social skills? Am I right?
In the long term as well?

RE: About porn
It makes you less anxious/intimidated/nervous in social/interpersonal situations.

However, it also makes you less interested in them... (aka, makes you more of a loner) Dodgy
