Clearly the people who existed before Jesus came didn't have access to his salvation. Are they all in hell? All the ancient Greeks, Egyptians, native Americans etc?

Aside from the fact that the Christian concept of Hell is really an invention of Jesus in the gospels and is very foreing to the OT (which it's kinda like asking what app people used before 1950 for social networking), the fact that Jesus (in the gospels) and Paul (in the epistles) have slightly different concepts of who goes to hell and who doesnt and the fact that a minority of christians as far back as Origen in the 2nd century believed in some form of unversalism named "apocatasis", the answer is NO Cool

Yup. And don't forget the Chinese, the Indians (from Asia), the people who were in Russia, the French, the Aboriginal peoples from Australia, the Celts and nordic populations, those who lived on some of the islands in the South Pacific. All went straight to hell. Nice guy, that god/jesus/ghost fella.

As mentioned by Djkamilo, there was no hell before the New Testament. Back then, they believed in a place called Sheol which roughly means "grave". It's a lot closer of an analog to Hades; a neutral place where everyone goes when they die.

So, we could then wonder, what happened in the transition from the OT to the NT. There are lots of possibilities!
  • God did away with Sheol, and threw everyone into hell, since they didn't accept Jesus as their lord and savior.
  • God did away with Sheol, and feeling generous, put everyone in heaven.
  • God did away with Sheol, and asked everyone if they accepted Jesus as their lord and savior and sorted them out accordingly.
  • God did away with Sheol, and sorted everyone based on something arbitrary (The OT mentions concepts of "wickedness" long before it mentions any laws.).
  • Sheol never existed, and there was always a heaven and hell and stop talking about this place called Sheol Satanbegone!
  • The King James Version only talks about Hell and not Sheol and it's the bestust translation evur.
  • Sheol is a bunch of bronze age Hebrew mythology and Heaven and Hell are a bunch of iron age Hebrew mythology piggy backing on the older mythology and none of it really matters.

But yeah, the Bible isn't exactly clear on this. I'm leaning toward the last one, given the Bible's track record on, well... everything.

RE: According to Christians, are all the people who lived before Jesus in hell?
If people could still get into heaven by simply believing in god and being "good" there was no reason for Jesus to sacrifice himself because there was nothing to forgive and sin was not rampant enough for such an act.

There for - No! Not a single person before jesus got into heaven.

Adam and Eve are in Hell for eating a mother fucking apple and they will burn and cry and chock and scream and wail for all eternity for eating an apple and we are all going to look down at them and laugh for all eternity.

Because THAT is the kinda fucked up psychopathic mentality we have.

Straight to hell do not pass go do not collect salvation. Pretty clear that the only way to the father is through the son, black and white, no pussy-footing around that one.
