Adam's missing rib / dick bone
A bio anthropology group I follow on facebook posted the following article:

http://www.improbable.com/2012/06/04/ada...euphemism/

Quote:In a letter to the editor in the American Journal of Medical Genetics, two authors suggest that the story of Adam’s rib being the humble beginnings of Eve is the result of a mistranslation. In reality, they suggest, the story is an explanatory myth for why humans are one of the few mammals lacking a baculum, or penile bone ...

I have access to the referenced paper through my university. I posted it on Scribd so others could read it.

It's an interesting suggestion, but I think it gives the ancient Hebrews a little too much credit in the biology department. Saying that Adam had his baculum removed implies that he too was an animal. The fact that the Hebrews considered man a special creation apart from animals shows that they didn't know about the evolutionary connection between all life on earth.

Is Adam having his literal "boner" removed any more ridiculous than the rib?

All the wasted brain power of people wondering, researching, pondering, analyzing a fucking myth. What might all this brain power collectively do if it focused on helping fix secular issues and not analyzing nonsense. Unreal.

The article asserts that a Hebrew child would know how many ribs humans have. I see no reason why that would be true. It's just another desperate attempt to find a teensy weensy bit of actual fact in an ancient myth system. Typical of those who actually know nothing about how and why those texts were put together.
Actually if they really KNEW anything about the origins of the myth, it's straight out of the Sumerian system, where much of Genesis came from.

There were eight "healing" deities. Each had a name that resembled a body part, (in the myth that had been injured and needed healing). The Babylonian word for rib is "ti". The goddess made to heal Enki's rib was "Nin-ti", "the lady/god of the rib." The exact same Babylonian name "ti" means "to make alive." It's a pun. Every scholar knows about this.

From my : http://www.thethinkingatheist.com/forum/...ins?page=2
Enki, the (supreme and Water-god, and God of wisdom), impregnates his half-sister, Nin-Hursang. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ninhursag . Enki wants a boy, but gets a girl. Then he impregnates the daughter, who also has a daughter. Nin-Hursang decides to stop all this immoral stuff by sowing eight poisonous plants in the garden. Enki eats the plants, and becomes ill. One of the sick organs is his rib. Nin-ti is created to heal Enki. Her name means, "she who makes live". Nin-ti means the same thing as the Hebrew word for "Eve". Nin-ti, is usually translated as the "lady of the rib". "Ti" means "to make live". Note : "Eve" is translated from the Hebrew chavvaòh , for lifegiver, as in "the mother of all living." Its root,
Chaya, means "serpent" in Aramaic. Eve and serpent are taken to be synonymous. Thus a "pun" is set up in the Hebrew, (which was used later.)

RE: Adam's missing rib / dick bone
Surely, SURELY, they CAN'T be POSSIBLY suggesting that a physical change such as this carries to the next generation! If they previously thought it was the rib bone, and have observed that males are not now mysteriously short a rib, WHYYYY would they be mysteriously short a dick bone as a result of Eve being made from Adam's cock?

Our next generations will not be showing up with fewer body parts as a result of our amputations, mastectomies, apendectomies or... or... dickbonedectomies.

That's why I said it gives the ancient Hebrews a little too much credit. Thanks for sharing.

I think it's actually more believable, given the source material we have to work with. YHWH has a bizarre fixation on foreskins and how people use their penises. I don't typically hear him going on and on about ribs.

Hell, it wouldn't surprise me if the talking serpent in the garden was mistranslated and was supposed to be a talking dick. That's all it is with this god: dicks dicks dicks dicks dicks. He needs a hobby. Preferably, a less violent one.
