RE: Adolf Hitler's birth house to be demolished
here in the US we'd want to keep that building because of its age. We are such a young country and value older architecture.
When I visited the UK it was put into perspective. I had dinner at The Thatch in Nantwich, believed to have been built in 1450. Old buildings are very common in Europe it seems Big Grin
Our hosts had lived in a house from the early 1700's.

Agreed and that's why I think memorial museums are so important to have. It's important never to forget such atrocities. I took a Sociology of Genocide course (which was a course mostly about the Holocaust) in college and my professor (who had family who were Holocaust survivors) used to say with tears in his eyes that remembering, even though painful, helps spread awareness and can help stop these horrendous acts from ever happening again. All that said, I think they should demolish Hitler's house. I don't think it adds any value to remembering and destroying it is kind of a symbolic way to say Fuck you, you sick fuck.

RE: Adolf Hitler's birth house to be demolished
This seems like a fairly basic question at first, but the more I think about it seems like the response says more about the person answering than the question itself.

The structure in question is the birthplace of one of the most hated men in recorded history. This person, while reviled by the vast majority, is idolized by a small minority.

Do we destroy history to thwart a minority?
Are we destroying a rallying point? A shrine?
Should it become a museum? A warning to the future?

Should we shame the dead man?
Perhaps erecting a sewage treatment plant? Public restrooms?
Would persons of Jewish heritage want a synagogue or museum?
Or simply shame him with neglect. Make the site a parking lot, or a park. Allow it to be forgotten.

Something to think about I guess.

Help for the living. Hope for the dead. ~ R.G. Ingersoll

Freedom offers opportunity. Opportunity confers responsibility. Responsibility to use the freedom we enjoy wisely, honestly and humanely. ~ Noam Chomsky

People still tour Vlad the Impaler's castle.

I'd like to live there just as a conversation starter. "You know Hitler use to live here. Want some cookies? Let me go get them out of Hitler's former pantry."

That's because the real one halted the invasion of their country. That particular invasion, anyway.

And yes, some idiots do want to see where the vampire lived, and they leave their tourist ducats behind them. Facepalm

it's exactly why the place should be demolished.
