Sad Advice on How to Comfort Someone? [Sad]
Excl Warning! Sad story begins now! Excl

My best friend just lost her dog tonight. Poor thing got hit by a car. She spotted it and I went out and moved the body into the yard, but I had no idea what I could say. I spent the next hour silently comforting her as she cried until her husband got home. I couldn't think of anything to say to her the entire time she was crying. What could I say? I wasn't going to tell her that her pet was in a better place. I wasn't going to say it was part of God's plan. The only thing I could tell her was that the dog didn't suffer and I wasn't even 100% sure about that because the dog had been out for a couple hours.

Has anyone else had to comfort someone without being religious about it? What do you say to someone in that situation?

Being there and staying till her husband got home probably meant more than anything you could have said. Other than genuinely saying you are sorry for her loss and the hurt she must feel, there isn't much more that can be said or done.

You were there, she wasn't alone, you let her cry...I think you did the best job that could have been done.

You are a good friend.

See here they are, the bruises, some were self-inflicted and some showed up along the way. - JF

I hope I'm a good friend. She's like my sister. I just wish there was more I could do. I'm sure everyone has said that at least once, though. Right?

We have all wished we could do more when we are powerless.

You did good.

Silence is the best answer.

NEW AND IMPROVED!
Twice the anger, Half the space!
