Advice please. What does a new atheist tell their children?

When you take something major out of a kid's routine, there will be a loss to the kid.
Fill the empty space with something different.
Instead of going to church you are going to........the park? Planetarium? Museums? Art exhibitions? Parades? Flea markets? Ice cream parlor? Sports games? Infinite possibilities here.
It's really about you spending the same time doing something with the kid.
