After secret Harvard meeting, scientists announce plans for synthetic human genomes
Quote:Three weeks ago, 130 scientists, entrepreneurs and policy leaders held an invitation-only, closed-door meeting at Harvard University to discuss an ambitious plan to create synthetic human genomes. Now, after a flurry of criticism over the secrecy of the effort, the participants have published their idea, declaring that they're launching a project to radically reduce the cost of synthesizing genomes -- a potentially revolutionary development in biotechnology that could enable technicians to grow human organs for transplantation.

The announcement, published Thursday in the journal Science, is the latest sign that biotechnology is going through a rapidly advancing but ethically fraught period. Scientists have been honing their techniques for manipulating the complex molecules that serve as the code for all life on the planet, and this same issue of the journal Science reports a breakthrough in editing RNA, a molecule that is the close cousin of DNA.

I like that the reason for secrecy was "because ignorant fearmongering idiots would have been too disruptive otherwise".

Well; not quite in so many words, of course...

... this is my signature!

Well that should get interesting. They're only talking about developping new therapies but they will be creating techniques to produce bigger, better humans. More or less only a matter of time before somebody tries this and it isn't as if we can turn back the technological clock.

For added controversy I suuggest we also create enhanced chimpanzees. We can send them over to the ICR to complain about defamation of character. Sadly Carlton Heston isn't alive to overact the moment.

Because in the future we will be able to create actual girly men.

RE: After secret Harvard meeting, scientists announce plans...
Hee hee. Maybe someday parenting courses will include object-oriented programming. We can have emerging class conflict between people who are made from proprietary software versus open source. Fads in design will result in "twins" or even hundreds of apparently identical kids from different parents. And of course someone will start twiddling bits, trying to engineer enhanced senses and abilities. Superkids will be banned from competitive sports, then as their numbers grow they will dominate competition. New arts will emerge which are only accessible to enhanced visual or auditory spectra.
And what will happen when enhanced people start reproducing "naturally," if that's still the word?
Bring on the chaos Humanity. I can't wait. Big Grin
