Alabama and same-sex marriage
Anyone else following this today? A pissing match between the Federal Court and the State Court.

Alabama State Motto: “We’re too backwards to change.”

"A Federal District Court judge, Callie V. Granade, ruled last month that Alabama’s ban on same-sex marriage was unconstitutional, but put her ruling on hold until Monday, to give the state a chance to appeal. On Sunday night, the state’s chief justice, Roy S. Moore, sent an order to county probate judges stating that they could not “issue or recognize a marriage license that is inconsistent" with state law.

But on Monday morning, the United States Supreme Court refused the state’s request to stay Judge Granade’s order pending the outcome of the state’s appeal.”

"But in 43 of Alabama’s 67 counties, the county Probate Courts, which issue the licenses, were not giving them to gay and lesbian couples, according to the Human Rights Campaign, a gay rights group. Many Probate Court judges declined to grant any marriage licenses.”

"Chief Justice Moore called on Gov. Robert Bentley to take action against any judges issuing licenses to same-sex couples, while judges who refuse to issue them could face sanctions from the federal court.”

Roy Moore was removed from the court years ago when he refused to take down the 10 commandments. He clearly lacks "judicial temperment". What a scary dude. It's people like him that the first immigrants to these shores came to escape. He is a fool. History will not deal kindly with him.

Insufferable know-it-all.Einstein God has a plan for us. Please stop screwing it up with your prayers.

Quote:"I think it's important for the people across the country to realize that the governor of Alabama today is not the governor of Alabama 50 years ago," Bentley said.

"This is not necessarily a civil rights issue. But I know that people tend to try to equate those two. However, I don't want Alabama portrayed in a negative light because when it's portrayed in a negative light, it hurts me recruiting jobs into Alabama. And so I'm hurting families when I can't help people get a job in this state.

"So I want to do everything I can to make sure that the people across the country, the people across the world, realize that Alabama is a different state and that we respect the rule of law and that's what I'm going to do."

I am glad he's not gonna be a dick like Wallace - to be honest, I was a little worried.

There ARE a lot of parallels between now and the 1960s, but it's certainly not an equivalent. And it IS a civil rights issue.

But, for some perspective. This did not happening to gay couples this week:

And this was not necessary for gay marriages to take place this week:

I'm ecstatic that my friends can get married, I'm also pleased that the National Guard isn't getting called in to escort the couples going to the courthouse to get a license through a blockade of state troopers as was necessary for blacks to enroll at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa and Tuskegee High, as well as Huntsville and Mobile. There were over 40 marriages in Big Spring Park in Huntsville for 2/9. Yay for progress. Time for other states to follow suit.

I'm interested to see the penalties the judges in towns like Cullman will face for refusing to issue licenses.
