I agree with everyone. Slippery slope for sure.

RE: Alabama church would like its own police force
My opinion is that something VERY bad is going on at the church and they want to be able to cover it up more easily. Much worse than drug busts at its schools. Because otherwise, they'd just spend more of their plentiful money on private security guards. This is looking in advance to shield themselves from scrutiny and consequences of their behavior.

They say they're worried about a mass shooting. I'm betting that if they have one, it's going to come from within and be the result of some kind of abuse on the part of the church's leaders/hierarchy.

RE: Alabama church would like its own police force
So this is such a big no I have issues wondering how this got into consideration.

If I have an issue with a local police force, I have recourse. Not much, but some. I can challenge a false arrest, report abuse, etc. I have legal options.

If such a thing happens with a private police force, what recourse do I have? If I'm arrested, what if they don't let me call someone? What if I'm treated poorly? This force isn't an agent of the state, they aren't answerable to it.

RE: Alabama church would like its own police force
This is such a terrible idea. I think it's horrid.

I'm also slightly amused that at the end of the article, one of the arguments a congregant used was that there are no state laws barring the carrying of guns at churches, and anyone can walk in unchallenged. HA! I wonder whose idea that was?!

They say it would be set up like campus police at colleges and universities- where the police force would ultimately answer to the local PD. But I'm skeptical. It seems like there is plenty of opportunity for the church leadership, who holds the purse strings that pay for the officers' jobs, to call the shots on what gets reported to the local PD. What are some solutions that colleges and universities have to deal with potential?

Also, are there additional risks simply because it's a church instead of a university? I think there might be. Churches dictate their own moral code that doesn't always align with state or federal law. What happens when church PD starts enforcing church morals over actual law? Is there any independent oversight?

I don't like this idea. I think they should stick to hiring security guards. But maybe that's my own bias speaking.

RE: Alabama church would like its own police force
The more I think about this, the more I ask the question "What are they really up to?" What can they do with a police force that they cannot do with deputized peace officers operating under the aegis of the secular justice system, or with security guards?

In other words, what abuses are they planning to commit? Do they want to hold uncooperative family members in custody when they refuse to go to church? Arrest women for "inappropriate" dress? Just plain shoot people they don't like?

I'm sorry, but your beliefs are much too silly to take seriously. Got anything else we can discuss?

Notice that no good and true Christian has prayed that they get a police force of their own.
