The Vatican has had mercenary troops for over 500 years. (Swiss Guard)....
Yes, but the Vatican is an independent state, so it gets to hire its own police force.

Which explains why they had their noses so badly out of joint when the la polizia raided them over some money laundering they've been up for decades. Delicious! I look forward to the day when people hold churches to account through the secular police forces.

Does no one remember when the Catholic Church had police powers?

Can you say Inquisition? Sure you can.

This was----THE SPANISH INQUISITION! Gasp

Alabama just wants Evangelicals to have their own Church Militant. If they decide to iron maiden a few people along the way, it's just a "few bad apples" in their ecclesial police force? Dodgy

Need to think of a witty signature.

And which is precisely the reason George Pell could get away with not returning to Australia to answer the Royal Commission's questions about his alleged covering up and relocating of paedophile priests here. We have an extradition treaty with Italy, but not the Vatican (it refuses to do so—for the all-too-obvious reasons of hiding paedophiles).

And there's absolutely NO way the Vatican's own police are gonna try and nail Pell—even considering that he aided and abetted paedophiles.

The RCC ran parts of Italy up to the mid-19th century. They ran the military and police forces until Italy was reunified and the RCC lost temporal power in Italy.

When I shake my ignore file, I can hear them buzzing!

Cheerful Charlie
