All encompassing book about science
I'm reading through old threads and I found one where people where talking about science and how crazy it is that people don't know this and that. (Hubble Deep Field image) as an example. I'm like well Shit never heard of it.

So do you know of any good books where it kind of just covers lots of major topics and written for the laymen? Like an encyclopedia of science. Small details but gives you the general idea of this and that.

I thinks I needs to learns some mores..

I already have Dawkins (The Magic of Reality). Bought it and read it to see if it's something I can read with my kids.

RE: All encompassing book about science
I read this one a while back. There have been some new discoveries since this book came out, but even my buddy who isn't really into physics and science enjoyed and understood it.

Excuse me, I'm making perfect sense. You're just not keeping up.

RE: All encompassing book about science
I have perennial recommendations. First, Stephen Hawking's pair: A Brief History of Time and The Universe in a Nutshell.

Second - my bet for the single greatest book ever, Simonyi's A Cultural History of Physics. But, that one's quite a bit denser.

... this is my signature!

RE: All encompassing book about science
I recommend these:

A Short History of Nearly Everything, Bill Bryson
(get the illustrated version, if possible)

Cosmos, Carl Sagan

The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark, Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan

For kids:
A Really Short History of Nearly Everything, Bill Bryson

Skepticism is not a position; it is an approach to claims.
Science is not a subject, but a method.
