Always good to see this in the news.....
A news story today referenced this 6 month old study of religiosity in America. I know we are all well aware that the number of people infected with faith is declining at an ever accelerating rate, but still nice to read about it Smile

http://www.pewforum.org/2015/05/12/ameri...landscape/

"Using the margins of error to calculate a probable range of estimates, it appears that the number of Christian adults in the U.S. has shrunk by somewhere between 2.8 million and 7.8 million." (since 2007) Thumbsup

"Meanwhile, the number of religiously unaffiliated adults has increased by roughly 19 million since 2007." Thumbsup

"..people in older generations are increasingly disavowing association with organized religion. About a third of older Millennials (adults currently in their late 20s and early 30s) now say they have no religion, up nine percentage points among this cohort since 2007, when the same group was between ages 18 and 26. Nearly a quarter of Generation Xers now say they have no particular religion or describe themselves as atheists or agnostics, up four points in seven years. Baby Boomers also have become slightly but noticeably more likely to identify as religious “nones” in recent years."

Hallelujah

"The Christian share of the population is declining and the religiously unaffiliated share is growing in all four major geographic regions of the country. Religious “nones” now constitute 19% of the adult population in the South (up from 13% in 2007), 22% of the population in the Midwest (up from 16%), 25% of the population in the Northeast (up from 16%) and 28% of the population in the West (up from 21%). In the West, the religiously unaffiliated are more numerous than Catholics (23%), evangelicals (22%) and every other religious group."

Amen, preach it!

Between 2.8M and 7.8M? Um, so much for accuracy. A margin of error of 5 million people. WTF? Couldn't narrow that down just a tad?

Using the survey +/- 2-3% rule with a country like China means around 80 million people. Surveys are hilarious.

Yeah I have always looked at surveys with suspicion. You see it all the time in the news. "Survey shows America distrusts atheists!" then you read the survey, 1143 people surveyed over the entire united states. Rolleyes yeah because 1143 people can accurately depict the opinion of 300 million people. Then you have to question the demographics, what the question was, how it was stated, agenda etc etc

You can thank Kim Davis and Mike Huckabee and their ilk for these swings. The more they show the ugly hateful side of that death cult the more decent human beings want nothing to do with it.

Speaking of showing the ugly, hateful side of Christianity...

Besides being a textbook example of projection, it is amazing how few changes would be needed to turn his rants into something you'd hear from ISIS. The sooner religions dies the better off this world will be.

Back on topic... in the last survey I took of me, 100% of respondents self-identified as atheist. The margin of error for extrapolating the results to the US in general is a bit high though.

Atheism: it's not just for communists any more!

Then absolutely - and provably - can.

There is room for methodological errors and bias, but population statistics are quite sound.

Exactly correct, as long as there are various demographics involved, the American public can be accurately represented by less people than you'd think. The 2.8-7.8 million is a wide interval but there is probably a very high (99%) confidence level. They could tell you it's 5-5.5 million at 70% confidence but that doesn't do anyone any good. It's the same way they poll people at election to predict the results. Stats are cool if done right.
