An illusion of tolerants
Last weekend an Austrian dragqueen won the Eurovision song contest.

And I am someone who doesnt give a fuck about that event, but in this case, it somehow made me really angry.

Not because of the winner but the way in which the country was presented as a result. It creates the idea that this country is somehow tolerant. I have spent half my childhood and a greater deal of my youth in that country and can definatly say that it is not! This is a country where a newly opend traffic roundabout receives a blessing by a catholic priest. The very fact that a traffic roundabout gets a festive catholic opening ceremony also says alot about this country in my opinion. It is a country in which the political right wing holds an annual event commemorating the dead of world war 2 at a memorial to members of the notorious SS.....
It is the country in which homosexuals are not a frequent sight on the streets and where those who are openly gay risk discrimination and getting harassed. It is a country in which conservatives demand a "special tax" for non catholics. It is a country in which the catholic clergy still has enormous influence over the social and political values of the nation. A country which claims to be the first victim of national socialism. A country which shelterd nazi war criminals. A country which known to be one of the most racist in Europe.

And this shithole of a country which I spent most of my lived life to get the fuck out of, is now somehow presented as a beakon of tolerant European values?!

If the fucknuts managing the contest wanted to give the award to a nation which is tolerant to make a political statement, they should have given it to the UK, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway or Germany!

Had to find a platform to express that rage.

Maybe it is an effort for change. The artistic communities worldwide are more open to ideas than the general public. This may well be their effort.

Skepticism is not a position; it is an approach to claims.
Science is not a subject, but a method.

Say you have a child with a mental disability who fails every test in school. Finally he manages to make a small step forward, getting his passing grade (albeit a low one). What do you do? Congratulate and encourage him to keep up the progress? Or tell him he's an idiot and always will be and that his grade is pathetic?

Personally I congratulate Austria for making a small step towards tolerance and encourage them to keep up the progress.
