Another "argument" with a theist
I get into a lot of arguments with theists because I live on a campus and make sure to challenge any ridiculous "religious oriented" signs, rallies, t-shirts, facebook posts or speaking points I encounter.

Today I got the usual "why do you hate Jesus" question from someone that knows me, which started veering into why religion is a terrible thing. I was down for it. I haven't had an argument in months and I needed to see if I still had my groove.

2 minutes into it, the usual happens. Lack of logic was conceded and rebutted with "I just FEEL something" and "I just can't accept that there's nothing out there."

I then disengaged and facepalmed in a corner for about 20 minutes. This is where every argument with a theist inevitably ends up. This "feeling" they have. Even when asked how they would feel if someone said to them, "I just KNOW that Poseidon exists. I just can't accept that the seas adhere to nature so rigidly without some powerful deity."

Also today, I saw a bumper sticker that said "Christianity isn't a religion, it's a relationship."

Please, someone tell me the most atheist country in the world so that I might go live there.

You know, if Christians had their own arguments turned on them they'd explode. Next time you should inform them that the feeling that they are feeling is simply a misfiring of chemicals in the brain evolved to provide motivation to carry out certain actions to enhance our chances of reproduction. You just don't understand.

They FEEL it! What more proof do you require?

Also, this brings up an aspect of arguing I can't stand; When the instigator of the argument falls back on something to the extent of "Well I just can't accept that <random BS here> isn't true, and nothing you can say will change that."

Don't instigate an argument if your fallback position is "I was never really interested in hearing you side. My mind is already set in stone and no amount of evidence, logic, or reason is going to convince me that my invisible cloud wizard isn't real."

The mark of the immature man is that he wants to die nobly for a cause, while the mark of the mature man is that he wants to live humbly for one

Every time someone mentions a "relationship with Jesus" I think of this video.

nsfw:

When I was a Jehovah's Witness I was in field service one morning and an atheist Professor answered the door. After he got done verbally raping my 18 year old Jesus logic I also fell back on the, "I feel God." line. He's probably dead by now but he'll never know the favor he did for me.

I also forgot to mention that he also did what frequently occurs in these "debates." He gets me to concede that there is a minute possibility that some abstract force possibly caused existence. Then he gets all giddy like he somehow proved christianity even after I explain that if he believes that, he is at best, a deist... in the loosest sense of the word.

There is a colossal difference between "some abstract force" and "vengeful, narcissistic, bearded man who hates gays, blacks, and women."

That's one of my favorite "proofs."

"Well you don't know for sure how it all started."

-Correct, but that doesn't mean that the next logical step is to assume invisible creatures are roaming around the metaphysical realm, demanding praise and using us as playthings in their malevolent puppet show.

I think that the Czech Republic is the most non-religious country in the world. In this census study, 60% of the C.R. considered themselves non-religious. Of course, any one of these countries would probably be what you're looking for Tongue

Sometimes arguing with theists is pointless, but even when it gets nowhere it still serves as an exercise in honing your debating skills.

I seriously considered retiring to Norway when I was in my whole 'tracing the family line' phase. You can't. They only allow people who seek asylum to move there. They are already cramped for space. So unless they changed their immigration laws in the past 10 years we'll have to build it here.
