Antonin Scalia thinks the Devil is a real person.
Back in Right-Wing-Cukoo-For-Cocoa-Puffs Land.

Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia was recently interviewed and had these little gems to say about the Devil. Nice to know people in high places still believe this kind of crap.

Read the full article here from New York Magazine.
http://nymag.com/news/features/antonin-scalia-2013-10/

NY MAG: You believe in heaven and hell?

SACLIA: Oh, of course I do. Don’t you believe in heaven and hell?

NY MAG: No.

SACLIA: Oh, my.

NY MAG:Does that mean I’m not going?

SACLIA: [Laughing.] Unfortunately not!

NY MAG: Wait, to heaven or hell?

SACLIA: It doesn’t mean you’re not going to hell, just because you don’t believe in it. That’s Catholic doctrine! Everyone is going one place or the other.

NY MAG: But you don’t have to be a Catholic to get into heaven? Or believe in it?

SACLIA: Of course not!

NY MAG: Oh. So you don’t know where I’m going. Thank God.

SACLIA: I don’t know where you’re going. I don’t even know whether Judas Iscariot is in hell. I mean, that’s what the pope meant when he said, “Who am I to judge?” He may have recanted and had severe penance just before he died. Who knows?

NY MAG: Can we talk about your drafting process—

SACLIA: [Leans in, stage-whispers.] I even believe in the Devil.

NY MAG: You do?

SACLIA: Of course! Yeah, he’s a real person. Hey, c’mon, that’s standard Catholic doctrine! Every Catholic believes that.

NY MAG: Every Catholic believes this? There’s a wide variety of Catholics out there …

SACLIA: If you are faithful to Catholic dogma, that is certainly a large part of it.

NY MAG: Have you seen evidence of the Devil lately?

SACLIA: You know, it is curious. In the Gospels, the Devil is doing all sorts of things. He’s making pigs run off cliffs, he’s possessing people and whatnot. And that doesn’t happen very much anymore.

NY MAG: No.

SACLIA: It’s because he’s smart.

NY MAG: So what’s he doing now?

SACLIA: What he’s doing now is getting people not to believe in him or in God. He’s much more successful that way.

NY MAG: That has really painful implications for atheists. Are you sure that’s the Devil’s work?

SACLIA: I didn’t say atheists are the Devil’s work.

NY MAG: Well, you’re saying the Devil is persuading people to not believe in God. Couldn’t there be other reasons to not believe?

SACLIA: Well, there certainly can be other reasons. But it certainly favors the Devil’s desires. I mean, c’mon, that’s the explanation for why there’s not demonic possession all over the place. That always puzzled me. What happened to the Devil, you know? He used to be all over the place. He used to be all over the New Testament.

NY MAG: Right.

SACLIA: What happened to him?

NY MAG: He just got wilier.

SACLIA: He got wilier.

NY MAG: Isn’t it terribly frightening to believe in the Devil?

SACLIA: You’re looking at me as though I’m weird. My God! Are you so out of touch with most of America, most of which believes in the Devil? I mean, Jesus Christ believed in the Devil! It’s in the Gospels! You travel in circles that are so, so removed from mainstream America that you are appalled that anybody would believe in the Devil! Most of mankind has believed in the Devil, for all of history. Many more intelligent people than you or me have believed in the Devil.

NY MAG: I hope you weren’t sensing contempt from me. It wasn’t your belief that surprised me so much as how boldly you expressed it.

SACLIA: I was offended by that. I really was.

We had a thread somewhere about this. Not only Scallia, but think about it. Even Obomba and his VP, (a practicing Catholic) *say* they believe in this stuff.
That means that the people who actually have the "nuclear football" in their control all the time, actually really think that in the room with them now today, there are invisible evil, fallen angel beings, trying to influence their behavior.

I think you're aware that atheism is not held in high regard in this country, right?

What is it, only 43% would vote for an otherwise qualified candidate who was atheist? So either a) these folks are among the minority of educated people who believe in god; or b) they are lieing about their beliefs to retain the support of the electorate.

RE: Antonin Scalia thinks the Devil is a real person.
When a supreme court justice is unable to discern fact from fantasy, this concerns me.
I know that his personal beliefs and his ability as a judge deciding a court case are compartmentalized in his brain.
If a defendant claimed that the devil possessed him and it was really the devil who killed the girl, I'm 98% certain the judge wouldn't allow that.

He may say he believes but I doubt his court rulings reflect that belief.

You have faith in that?

Actually you are probably correct. I thought I would hate the dude, but watched the Piers Morgan interview of him, and gained some respect for him. He's humorous, and a strict Constitutionalist. At least he's consistent. He says the only thing that "informs" his decisions, other than the Constitution, is the Federalist Papers. Morgan did get him to admit that people have the "right to what is reasonable", which is about as subjective, and changing as you can get.

I wouldn't be so sure about that, sadly. Undecided

What I don't get is why all those devil-believers seem to associate Satan with the Blue states. I have it on good authority that the devil went down to Georgia.
