Don't ask.

It's something stupid the Internet did circa 2004.

The internet has had some truly monumental stupid moments, hasn't it?

the internet IS a monumental stupid moment. But considering our current standards for intelligence and stupidity, that means the Internet may be the very best thing ever happened on this planet Smile

So, it's kind of like... not having big piles of stupid just here and there in pockets around the globe... rather, those piles of stupid will now be spread thinly around to cover the entire planet. Consider

Undecided

They really get a bad rap when everyone else is much worse.

Well the Catholic church was very nasty when it held power. It did as much to stunt human advancement as possible. Between the Inquisitions, the witch burnings, the anti-science decrees during the beginning of the enlightenment, the crusades, the horrible corruption and outright dishonesty the Catholic church has rather earned the reputation it has. Oh and this is not even mentioning the aids epidemic in Africa and the endemic pedophilia.

The Catholics were partially responsible for the renaissance. The were particularly oppressive in later years, but at the beginning of the the renaissance they were instrumental in setting up universities, and the reteaching the population to read and write. They even encouraged biblical questioning. They realized there were certain inconsistencies in the bible and sought to resolve them using logic. How bizarre is that? Just saying, credit where credit it due.

Not to mention that the Catholic Church is the largest private provider of healthcare to people with HIV/AIDS.

Ah, the Catholic Church - solution to and cause of AIDS problems world-wide.

They're hardly private, though, are they? If by 'private' you mean 'non-governmental', then no, they hardly qualify.

They're a government department who've outlasted their government. Not to mention their headquarters and top officials are sovereign and independent. Hell, they've even got taxes.

You make a convincing argument, but outside of the Vatican they are mostly private. The Public Sector is defined as controlled by the government. While they do receive tax breaks by some governments, and do collect taxes in the Vatican, outside of the Vatican I would say they are still under their own control. A group of private individuals. At best I think you could call it a grey area, but still mostly private.
