Are you a psychopath?
I just saw a documetation about a guy from Japan. In the 1980th he killed a woman, had sex with her (after), and then ate parts of her. He is a psychopath. He has a deep psychological problem, when he sees a pretty woman, he wants to eat her. And he does not feel bad for what he did, he has never been convicted. He did it in France where they do not put people in front of a judge when they are psychologically that challenged (to say it nicely). And when he came back to Japan he was a free man because in Japan he has never done anything bad. He is still alive, by now he wrote 19 books about what he did in France, he was in pretty much all Japanese media, he is making money from the books and from porn.

Now this documentary made me think about psychopaths in general. As far as I know a psychopath is someone who does not have a bad conscience and who can not experience emotions, or at least not in the way most people do. This makes them seem cold, and due to that they can do bad things without thinking about it twice.

So as far as I understand this, everyone of us can become a psychopath, given the circumstances. Or is that something different? That when stuff changes it counts as adjustment and not as a psychological disability?
If I look at myself, I know from experience that I am able to turn of my emotions and feelings completely, like flipping a switch. Also I am a very rational, reasonable person. I think in my case that would mean that in extreme situations I am able to do extreme things. Not going into too much detail about how extreme but I did think about a lot of things, situations that might or might not happen, and thought about how I would react.
But all in all I am someone who likes peace, who likes it quiet, who would not harm anyone just because.

Did you ever think about this topic?
Do you have more info on psychopaths? Are you one? Do you know one?
Do you know more about the topic?

Yeah, according to my most recent diagnosis. What it means is that more meaning is necessary.

I have thought about it more than I would like. Next to the definitions in the link should be a picture of my mother, I can say 'yes that fits' on nearly every one of the traits for both.

RE: Are you a psychopath?
There are a lot of different specific disorders that fit under psychopath or/and sociopath, and we don't know the half of it yet.

That area of psychology is underdeveloped because these folks cannot be treated with therapy, they lie all the time and it is hence very difficult to establish good definitions of the disorders and subcategories of these disorders. One can only compare known actions, and not any feelings or motivations etc.

So, there is a lot of work to be done before even the definitions are properly defined.

What we do know is that there are a lot of them, that all of us know one or more, and that the great majority is never diagnosed with anything.

They are never good to associate with because they like to manipulate other people's perceptions, but only some are truly dangerous on a physical level.

I looked into this some time ago, progress may have been made in the meantime. But last I saw, they were the least defined disorders out there.

RE: Are you a psychopath?
The brain of the psychopath is very different than the so called "normal" brain and very recent research in brain scans of psychopaths has confirmed this.
I find this subject so fascinating and a little scary ... I know several people who fit the sociopath check list completely. Sadcryface

I would be curious to have my own brain scanned.
They probably wouldn't find anything, though. Blush Laughat
I would hope. Evil_monster

RE: Are you a psychopath?
I have a series of pictures that include my mother, one of her brothers, my grandmother, and my great grandmother. They were taken when my mother was about 4 or 5. The home health nurse is at the house giving the kids their immunizations. The picture of my mother is almost frightening...there is no hint of expression, vacant eyes, no sense of fear or pain even with the needle in her arm. When I first saw them, I thought wow, great poker face. But that's just it, she is devoid of normal human emotion and it shows at that early age.

Being her victim (I mean child) I thought she was how every mom was...as I got older and was exposed to other people I could sense that something was different but not yet able to figure it out.

A few years ago I went to a therapist to try to sort things out when I had decided to cut ties with my mother. Just a short while into explaining to the doctor why...she looked at me and said...Oh Angie, your mother is a very sick woman.

This leap, while I had thought about it for a long time, came after she called to tell me a cousin had attempted suicide followed by her saying...and because of what he did I had to do this, and I had to do that...and on and on....it was all about her somehow. The gears turned and slipped into place at that moment though I still didn't have the right words for what was wrong with her. I told her to never call me again which she asked me to repeat, when I did there were a couple beats of silence followed by the words...you got it Angie, in the iciest, scariest tone of voice, it gave me chills. It still does when I replay it in my head. The voice of a truly sick and twisted woman.

And as the therapist told me and has been noted here on this thread and in links...there's no fixing what's wrong with her. I had to remove myself to save myself. My sister hasn't been able to do that yet though most calls between she and our mother leave her emotionally drained.

For years I thought her problem was alcohol...it's much deeper than that.

I'm not anti-social. I'm pro-solitude. Sleepy
