Are you an atheist for a reason?
Obviously this is directed at the atheists here; those of you who don't pin that title on yourselves can step out, or alternatively, answer the converse of the athests' question (I'll add it at the end in case you care).

Some recent posts made me wonder how many people here who call themselves atheists do so because their former religion (or their local religion for those who, like me, were never religious) would disrespect them because of something about them. Race, gender, sexual preference, or whatever. To put it another way, is there something about you that would be offensive to whatever religion you would most likely belong to, if your mere existence didn't offend that religion?

Is that all, or even part, of the reason you became or remain an atheist?

For example, an answer might be "I'm not Christian because I'm gay and Christians don't accept that" or "I would be a Mormon but I'm black and they still don't accept blacks much" or whatever.

I'm not even asking you to out yourself - if your reason is secret, I'd accept "yeah, my local church would call be a sinner but I'm not saying why" or some such.

I suppose it doesn't really matter. Just a point of curiosity to see how many atheists might be atheists because they feel like it's the only club that would accept them (or at least because they feel like the religious clubs would reject them). It might be interesting to see just how much impact the narrow-mindedness of most religions is driving people toward atheism.

For the non atheists: is there something about you (see above) that your religion says is wrong/sinful/evil but you do it anyway and yet you still remain a believer? Care to share?

RE: Are you an atheist for a reason?
I'll start, though it's not very interesting.

Nope, nothing about me. Atheist from birth, atheist every day of my life. Straight Caucasian male in the United States, I don't belong to any minority group, ethnic group, or any other group that would be categorically disrespected by any mainstream religion.

I do like porn though. Practically an addict. That is on the no-no list for many religions, including my local favorite, Mormons.

I'm an atheist because there is no evidence for any god, whatsoever. That's that. The End. Jeez how hard can that be to grasp??

Becoming an atheist simply because you are gay and the church doesn't accept that has got to be the shittiest reason ever. Just because your god hates you, doesn't automatically make him not exist (although it probably it all crap anyway). And we always blame theists for picking and choosing..

I just got bored with fairy tale books in general and haven't touched any of them since I was 10, and that includes the bible.

I've always been an atheist. Believing in a god just isn't something my brain could do. Tongue It stays rational and reasonable, whilst the rest of me plays and does stupid stuff all day long. Smile

I'm not an atheist for a reason, I'm an atheist because of reason.

I'm not an Atheist in it's most strict definition, however I am an non-believer because all other proposed possibilities seem so unlikely that I see no reason to give it any merit whatsoever. It really is that simple.

Yeah, that's a given for just about all atheists. Certainly for me too. So, not hard to grasp at all.

I should have been more explicit that this point was understood and that I was really looking for other reasons outside of this one.

I became an atheist mostly because I grew out of religion. As a kid, I had mostly accepted what I was told by adults who I had taken for granted as knowing what they were talking about. As I grew older and began thinking more for myself, I realized that too much of what I was being told by religion didn't fit right with reality. At first, it was hard to admit this, but the more I did, the more I realized what I was being taught just couldn't be correct. I briefly considered alternative religions, but eventually decided none of it made sense. Thus, I became an atheist.

I never actually believed in dieties, and that's because I've never seen any compelling evidence for them. I'm an atheist because I haven't seen any evidence suggesting deities are real.
