@Stark Raving @Chas

I have already presented the legal definition of porn here:

Both.

As long as it stays a discussion and does not turn into trying to get someone off; you're fine.

It's the difference between showing a vagina and showing a girl rubbing her clit to get off.

(31-03-2014 11:10 AM)Stark Raving Wrote:  Ok, I think a lot of people are overlooking an important point Chas was trying to make earlier...we can't redefine "porn". Porn can be interpreted as pictures, video, text, or any other form of expressing sexual thoughts and ideas. SO, if you want an 18+ section that allows explicit sexual discussion! you better damn well allow porn. Otherwise, you walk a very blurry line, and THAT is how you run into problems.

The only option for this to work (IMO of course) is to have a section similar to the Clubhouse. A section where peoe are granted access, based on our knowledge of them, how they interact with the community, and how much they are trusted by staff, vets, and the community as a whole.

Porn IS allowed. Again, without allowing porn, there would be no steadfast guidelines to follow. Because some people don't want to see certain things, I would suggest that a guideline for the 18+ section be accurate thread titles. In a section like that, it's only fair to be transparent about the intended content of the thread.

We can assume people will act in an appropriate "adult" manner. If they don't, they lose their 18+ privileges. And in a section like this that should be easy. Set out some simple rules like in the personal issues section, and enforce them strictly. Easy peasy lemon squeezy.

The point is not for us to share porn. The point is to allow us to have adult discussion. I think if that was clear to Seth he may soften his position. The problem is, the idea inevitably sounds like "we want a porn section." That just isn't it. The only reason for allowing porn and nudity is so that we can have what some people may consider "pornographic discussions." Not to mention, threads like the boobie appreciation thread could be much more appreciated. Tongue

Remember, keep it simple.

I have fully explained this to Seth.

Waiting for an answer.

RE: Area69 for Adults(and Gwyneth lovers) only
Today is the first time I saw this thread so please forgive my late input, but I wanted to add my 2 cents. This might not be popular, but I think it's important. If it's already been said, my apologies. I haven't read the 34 pages and don't have the time to do so right now.

I am against the idea of this thread and here is why:

Seth has started a great thing with his podcast, website, and this forum and he works very hard so that we and others may benefit from all his efforts. The subject is obviously primarily atheism and related subjects. His stated purpose of the forums is to give atheists a place to gather. I see that as meaning primarily for support and for information sharing. Now it certainly doesn't have to be limited 100% to those by any means. There is no reason there can't be some threads or forums here that are for just plain fun and indeed many (which I assume Seth had input into if he didn't directly create them himself) are exactly for that.

But... porn is a controversial subject. That much is obvious or this thread wouldn't even exist. In my opinion, we shouldn't be adding any unnecessary controversy to a website with a far more important purpose. We already have plenty of controversy just because of the subject of the whole website and I don't think it's a good idea to risk tainting the subject (which is how it would be seen by at least some people).

I understand the idea is to limit access to the thread if it's created, and I do agree that we have to be careful about what we are opening up for viewing/reading by minors. But believe me the word will get out about such a thread even if people who are just looking to point out our faults can't see anything specific. In fact, not being able to see anything would likely cause them to speculate about what's being hidden and whatever they say would probably sound far worse than anything in the thread. I don't think it's worth it. There are plenty of other forums and websites where those interested can go to discuss, post, and/or view porn or have adult conversations.

It's important that we don't forget the real and very important purpose of this website and don't do anything that would potentially diminish it's credibility. And it's important that we respect Seth and all the hard work he does and do our best not to do anything that might blemish his work.

I am not accountable to any God. I am accountable to myself - and not because I think I am God as some theists would try to assert - but because, no matter what actions I take, thoughts I think, or words I utter, I have to be able to live with myself.

I stopped reading this right there. Do not comment on something if you haven't read the discussion. FFS this is like people posting comments without reading the article or watching the video, worthless.

Bullshit. The worst that would happen by not reading is I might repeat what someone else already said. I usually do read before posting, but I shouldn't even have spent the time to write what I just did because my time is too tight - came here on a work break and spent more time than my break because the subject is TOO IMPORTANT. So read it if you care about Seth and his website.

Fuck that pissed me off!!!!

I hate to repeat what others have been repeating for days now, but.

The internet also has plenty of room for political discussions, funny images, ranting, recipes, music. I'm pretty sure TTA is not "about" all those things either, but, whowouldathunk, there's plenty of that stuff in here.

I agree with what others have said. Is it too much to ask for a place where we can talk like adults without the fear of a 16 year old reading what we write? It's damn creepy.

I think if it is made clear to Seth that this is not porn sharing we're asking for, he'll change his mind.

What is the value of adding an opinion if you don't even understand the subject?
When you get a chance later and have time to actually read through the thread, come back and post your opinion, and then I will actually be interested in what you think.
You can't expect me to be interested in your thoughts and opinions if you don't even take the time to read mine.

Damn you people are quick typers, this is directed at Impulse's comment.

RE: Area69 for Adults(and Gwyneth lovers) only
I had suggested in an earlier post, that probably wasn't read by anyone other than Stark and chas...that it be a legal aged, known members thread or subforum. Known members so that trolls and socks wouldn't be allowed to dive right in. It often takes a little while to catch on to socks so it makes sense to not have the area open to every newcomer.

As for porn...videos, pictures, etc....forum rules apply. I am fairly sure that those who want porn know exactly where to find it outside of this forum. Not to mention that everyone here has email and other ways to pass around pictures and videos.

What is being asked for is a place where adults can talk with other adults without wondering if the kids can hear. This could also have the benefit of being a place to move to when other threads get a bit iffy as to age-appropriateness.

It ain't that difficult. Facepalm

Ok I did read it and it became obvious that you don't know what is being discussed thus rendering your opinion irrelevant to the actual conversation. What you are talking about is not what is being discussed and had you read the thread you would know this.
