RE: Ask an Agnostic
In a room are a genie, a beautiful woman, a male engineer, and a male mathematician.

The genie says to the men, "Each minute, you may move half the distance to the woman. When you reach her, you may have her."

The mathematician says, "Well, that's pointless, I'll never reach her!"

The engineer says, "Maybe so, but eventually I'll get close enough!"

You can call yourself an agnostic out of rigorous logic, or you can agree that for all practical purposes, you're an atheist. At 6.9 on the Dawkins Scale, I'm an atheist.

Skepticism is not a position; it is an approach to claims.

Stop trolling, n00b. Big Grin

Atheist ain't a bad word, it's one of the best words evers. Thing I don't get is lack of belief. I don't know what that stuff is. I don't see how lack of belief in unicorns is a well-formed statement when the cognition clearly has a concept of unicornness and the belief that that concept is widely shared. Big Grin

Imma 7 atheist. I think ya hafta be crazy to be a 7 atheist, but I qualify. Thumbsup

Sure, there's a heavenly host mentioned, but only Michael and Gabriel are given names. But 2 is not any kind of Holy Number, but three is. Therefore, 3 angels can dance on the head of a pin.
Rafieal? Or Rapheal was an angel named in the bible. That completes your set.

Rafael is a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. Only one TMNT can dance on the head of a pin.

(Also, he's named in apocryphal writings that Protestants don't accept as part of the Bible, so I didn't think of him. Lucifer is the third mentioned by name, but the other two are too snooty to dance with him.)

RE: Ask an Agnostic
Pffffffft.

For me the answer is easy:

"Is there a god?"

"I don't know, but I don't think so."

Categorize it any way you like.

RE: Ask an Agnostic
Hey, Chas.

I agree that by certain definitions I'm an Atheist. But by others I am not and by still others I cannot be. Also, I never studied engineering Cool

Anyhoo, close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.

On the Dawkins scale I am a comfortable 4.

I'm still waiting to see someone rip apart the Dawkins scale. He uses all kinds of terms that don't jive with the not-Theist definition of Atheism, makes room for Agnostics and makes no mention of Gnosticism. But for some wacky reason, no one seems to want to touch that one Cool

Sure thing, Johnny Revision.

Quote:That's where I disagree - we have no evidence whatsoever of anything supernatural or spiritual.

When two people share an opinion it's called agreeing. I never said there was any evidence, in fact, I explicitly said there wasn't.

There is a gulf of difference between studied fact and metaphor. If you want to regurgitate ideology, you go right ahead. I'll wait for the facts to come in.

Amen.

Quote:As for the rest of your post, I don't have the time to respond right now, even if I care to.

Awwwwwww. You mean I don't get to be condescended to and insulted by a hypocrite? What ever shall I do?

Peace and Love and Empathy, Chas,

Matt

I can't see that it needs ripping apart. It's just a rhetorical device, an illuminating way to look at belief. It's not a formal, definitive scale that needs a lot of effort to attack or defend.

Hey, Chas.

Then why all the fuss about definitions?

Mostly because I like fuss. Thumbsup

One point that I was making has been to differentiate between agnostic in principle and atheist in practice,
and I have been responding to others' strident espousal of this or that definition. Hence my parable about the mathematician and the engineer.

It's easy to have misunderstandings if we don't know what each other means by the words we use, so clarifying our working definitions should be helpful.
