We do see ourselves as anti-religious but are referring to spiritual religion. ALL religions of a spiritual nature are inventions of man. But if we are to be called a religion, why not be a religion based on man's natural instincts? Satanism is not a white light spiritual religion; it is a
religion of the flesh, the mundane, the carnal. Man needs to enjoy himself here and now, instead of waiting for his rewards in a non-existent heaven right?

@bemore - You might find you see yourself mirrored in the philosophy of Satanism. Satanic Bible is a great read either way, not too hard to find in most book stores.

I might have a look in my local bookstore for a copy for a couple of reasons.

1: To look up and explore the content like I have done with many other religions.
2: To see the reaction on the persons face behind the counter when I buy it.
3: To have it on my bookshelf..... interesting conversation starter.

For no matter how much I use these symbols, to describe symptoms of my existence.
You are your own emphasis.
So I say nothing.

Can't say i particularly like the fundamental values of LaVeyan's satanism, but at least satanists value life they have instead of looking forward to death like Christians.

The meaning of peace is the absence of opposition to socialism.

"Satanism has been given such a bad name."

I literally agree with this statement.

The common perception is that Satan is the root of evil. So perception is that you worship Satan and want evil.

The term Satan actually means adversary. So what does that mean about Satanism, are you adverse to everything?

From what I have heard about the Satanism religion it is nothing about these things I have mentioned above, so yeah it has been poorly named. Many potential members must be turned off by the name and many people must feel ridiculous telling others that they are a Satanist.

With a name like that, it is hard to take it seriously.

RE: Atheism and Satanism
LaVey's reasoning for calling it Satanism was to keep "undesirables" out. It was definitely poorly named, still is, and will probably continue to be.

RE: Atheism and Satanism
I see it as a left over novelty from the 70's. One of the first mainstream challenges against American Christianity. As Christanity's influence (hopefully) diminishes in the next few generations, I ponder if there will be a need to identify as a Satanist. I read LaVey's work and found it to be a humorous parody of both religion and Nizetchian ideals. I don't see the practicality of it (other than the lulz).

Theistic Satanism is a bunch freaks who missed the point.

I think if you identify as a Satanist you must first believe the shitballs in the Bible. LaVey's "satanism" is kind of incorrectly placed name in that logic...

Ridiculous....
If you believe in Satan, you are not an atheist. You can't be both.

Well, you're making the mistaken assumption that theistic satanists actually worship Satan as depicted in the Bible, which is just false. You might want to look into people like Michael W. Ford or the Temple of Set, or if you hold to a more "strict" definition of satanism, Joy of Satan ministries or the First Church of Satan.

As for LaVeyan satanism, I take it that you've never bothered to look into. LaVey chose the word because it means "adversary", which he found attractive. Why should we grant Christians the right to ultimately define words, when the words have perfectly functional alternative meanings? Furthermore, like LaVey pointed out in the Satanic Bible, the name keeps a lot of idiots out. If the name alone is scary to you (not you specifically), we probably don't want you in the first place.

I don't believe in God. Why, therefore, would I believe in Satanism.

Because satanism is not reverse Christianity.
