I occasionally hear the rather asinine statement by theists, "If you don't believe in god then your life has no meaning".

My typical counter is that my life has lots of meaning to me and as it's the only life I'm ever going to have I mean to live it to the full and enjoy it.

I'm sure you've encountered similar opinions from theists and made similar points.

Here are a few "meanings of life" from other atheists......some quite eloquent and moving.

Hello Annawolf. Big Grin

I'd be rather hard pressed to call said link a 'Documentary'.

Lots of assertions and buzz word, though.

Still, hope you enjoy the forums. Smile

RE: Atheism and "The meaning of life"
I truly have never felt the need to have an objective "meaning" for my life. The subjective meanings I assign work fine for me. It doesn't disturb me to understand those meanings are subjective.

When someone tries to persuade me of some objective meaning of life, they have usually wanted money and/or labor from me.

If there's some objective meaning to my life, yet I never understand it, that's just how it's going to be.

RE: Atheism and "The meaning of life"
From the POV of eternity and a universe that changes constantly, I don't see anything or anyone having intrinsic "meaning."

I see meaning as subjective: Intensely personal, and informed by individual experiences. It's ludicrous to think of getting one's meaning from a god.

As far as I'm concerned, meaning abides in whatever things hold our attention -- one big thing or many small ones.

The meaning of life I would say is not to live in the hope of an afterlife, but to live in this universe with each other.

Look for the goodness in others, and you will find stars that shine more luminously than they do in the night sky.

Gwyneth and Angelina don't get along, so obviously jihad is indicated. Tongue

Yes

Oh, the fellow might be really smart.

'Smart' still doesn't stop people latching onto completely weird stuff, though.

Thumbsup

I like this.

Shakespeare's Comedy of Errors.... on Donald J. Trump:

He is deformed, crooked, old, and sere,
Ill-fac’d, worse bodied, shapeless every where;
Vicious, ungentle, foolish, blunt, unkind,
Stigmatical in making, worse in mind.
