Atheist Funeral
Hi

I recently attended a Catholic funeral and it made me think about what I would like my service to be. Does anyone have any ideas for an atheist-type funeral. I know it'll be important for my family to have some type of service, but I want to plan something appropriate for me.

Someone on here before mentioned the idea of planting a tree. I kind of like that idea. I personally don't want a service. I want an Irish wake, which is something we already do in my family.

If it were me and my family wanted to do something for my funeral I wouldn't mind because I'll be dead. Whatever makes them feel better is fine with me.

RE: Atheist Funeral
One suggestion, a poem-

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.
Mary Elizabeth Frye

Second suggestion- start looking now for an atheist officiant to help hold a celebration of your life, instead of having a religious eulogy that talks about gawd for 99% of it.

I've considered making a CD/DVD with me as the officiant and leave it in my safe for my family after I'm dead. But I guess I'm just not egotistical enough to make a production of my own life. Dodgy

Two very different treatments of that poem

I don't give a rat's hairy little ass what they do with me when I'm dead.....

I'll be too damned dead to notice......

....

But -- I'd be pissed if they spent a bunch of money getting rid of a dead body. That's just stupid.

We have parties, play music, invite people to tell stories about the dearly departed. Mom's was like that with about 150 in attendance. Live piano because she loved the piano bars. Played Alice's Restaurant per her request and sang along.
