RE: Atheists, foxholes, you know the drill...
The "atheists in foxholes" argument seems to be a tacit admission that one of (if not the) most powerful motivations for believing in god is fear.

E 2 = (mc 2)2 + (pc )2
614C → 714N + e + ̅νe
2 K(s) + 2 H2O(l) → 2 KOH(aq) + H2 (g) + 196 kJ/mol
It works, bitches.

Christians on the other hand, they sure as hell (Tongue) don't place enough faith in their deity to lay down their arms and pray that it simply smites the enemy. They rely on their training and on each other. One might say then, that there are ONLY atheists in foxholes.

Yup. Who would I want next to me when the shit hits the fan? Some idiot who drops to his knees and starts praying or some badass motherfucker trying to figure out we get out of this shitstorm 'cause if we don't we are fucked forever. Hmmmm ... Consider

As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
And I will show you something different from either
Your shadow at morning striding behind you
Or your shadow at evening rising to meet you;
I will show you fear in a handful of dust.

RE: Atheists, foxholes, you know the drill...
Oh, boy! They were wrong. If you are defending a wrong position you can't win against a good debater, but they weren't even good themselves.

Their examples were quite funny because I have been in both the situations they described Big Grin
Okay, technically it wasn't a foxhole, but still; and I have been in a ship trying to race a hurricane.
To get to the heart of what they meant, I think just as often people confess doubts when faced with death. Even Jesus is the standard bible asked "My God, why hast though forsaken me?" It's true that some atheists may grasp at straws in their final hour, but it is certainly far from a universal truth.
