Atheists... how do you respond? Morality due ONLY to God.
Dear Former Religious Atheists,

Have you ever been hit with this ‘comeback’ when speaking
with the saved?

“Silly Atheist, the REASON you have morals, ethics and any
understanding between right and wrong is because YOU were raised that way in
the church early in life so it was programmed into you by God and his teachers. Also you parents
were Christians and their parents before them. You neighborhood and region was
god fearing so you were immersed in it, you could not escape it, so WITHOUT god
you’d be a (insert extreme depraved example here)”

It’s not that often, but when I get into what I think is a
fair debate (someone who genuinely wants to discuss this stuff…mistake number
one) and they run out of ‘ideas’ they’ll resort to this.

I am normally so astounded by the claim that it generally
leaves me somewhat speechless (hard to imagine). The stupidity of the argument
just floors me.

What I have began doing is quit making statements but start
asking questions (like I do here) about morality and where morality comes from.
Drawing comparisons to human morality and that of the OT god’s morality. They
generally create oddball circular arguments, like our beloved KC does, but it
almost always ends with them getting gruff, and hatefully saying something like
“You’ll see when you are roasting in hell”, which is when you KNOW the argument
is over.

Do you guys ever run into this line of reasoning about
morals and their origins?

What methods do you use to answer the sheeple?

I simply ignore fundamentalists when they get into this stage of the argument. It is always circular, and none of them bring anything new to the table. They are all quoting from the soundboard of Creationist and Fundamentalist websites and lack most, if not all reason. The only thing I enjoy arguing is the "Free Will" argument. It always leaves em' speechless when you present it in laymen's terms.

RE: Atheists... how do you respond? Morality due ONLY to God.
I usually bring up the following:

1) Examples of morality in the animal kingdom.
2) Point out that psychologists have discovered there are two kinds of morality: Instinctual (evolved to help us deal with split second life or death decisions during our animal and early human past) and Rational (only came about after human society had time to construct social mores).
3) Point out similarities in religious laws throughout the world, which reflect "societal laws" that are universal to "human culture" (don't kill, don't steal, etc.).
4) Morals vary depending on the culture--one example I often give is a particular nomadic tribe in Africa that feels it is moral if a mother kills one of the twins she gave birth to because she would never be able to support both children. If Christians disagree, then they are just projecting their OWN culture's morality onto another.

I also like to bring up that their system of morality is actually borrowed from another culture. A lot of Christians don't realize (or willing chose to ignore the fact) that their ancient European ancestors actually worshiped pagan gods. Christianity was borrowed from a distant Middle Eastern culture and only became super popular and spread throughout the western world because the emperors of Rome decided to make it the state religion. (It's sort of like Buddhism. People think Buddhism is Chinese, but it was actually borrowed from India.) Once they understand this you can ask them where their ancestors got their morals from prior to becoming Christians.

Can you share a few of these?

If they were to claim 'programming' by the church then the answer is there. It's not God instilling morals but people instilling morals on you. Nothing you can really say will convince them though. If you explain that empathy is the base of right and wrong they will just assume God gave us empathy. Explain the biology of it all and they point to intelligent design (complexity = God).

... Well, I mean we're kinda saying "Foolish Christian, you *think* your morals come from God but really it's you that's acting, not God" Tongue I think I'd just state the counterclaim, that they are the deluded ones.
