RE: Atheists need a Temple
I agree to the concept of such a construction, if...
- Such a place is able to provide solace and comfort for those who seek help, be it inmates, the homeless, runaway children, societal rejects...
- Such a place provides a community, for atheists, agnostics and even theists to interact and help one another regardless of their beliefs.
- Such a place acts as a hub for intellectual discussion, with periodic sharing by people of various fields holding various opinions. Open-mindedness would be a virtue and actively promoted.
- Such a place is able to educate the younger generation how to be a decent human being. Love and respect one another, commit acts of random kindness not expecting any returns, be honest and true to yourself, and spread harmony to everyone around you. Most importantly, view the world as an open-minded skeptic. Question the validity of everything.

It would be a wonderful place to go to, learning something new every time you visit such a place.

On an unrelated note, I read "First F***king Baptist Church" as "Fist F***king Baptist Church". Urgh.

Atheists already meet in community centres in Melbourne.

I nominate the Bunny Ranch.

"Sexy Girls, Great Drinks, and Fine Cigars" sound like fine sacraments to me.

Further...

I don't think we need temples but this approach, perhaps, is what we should be aiming for.

I have often thought that the positive value that religions can still claim (comfort, consolation etc. and even charity to a degree) have not been matched adequately by secular society.
Sure, there is health care, trauma centres / help-groups but these are never overtly seen as the alternative to religion even though they are used as such.
Sports can claim the same (and they do have temples).

de Botton is saying learn from the way religions exploit the animal within us.

Actually my burf day was a bit like that (except for the blueness and the vomiting) but I was drunk enough to join this forum on that day!
