I actually really like that these women's self defense classes are situation specific:

Ground Fighting
On Vacation
In and Around a Car
Under the Knife
Mugging
At your Front Door

Thanks for the advice. They have little write ups on each of the instructors, so I'll check out their experience level.

"Stand still this is a mugging". "Fuck! Mugging's only next week". Tongue

Yeah that would suck! Tongue Luckily, I've never been mugged. My bf works in the city and his female coworker got mugged recently on her way to work. That's what prompted me to start looking into self defense classes again.

I have had quite a few potentially dangerous situations happen but luckily nothing bad came of them. I just want to be able to protect myself if I am ever in a situation and need to.

RE: Atheists who work out
My primary way to avoid that stuff would be to be as careful as possible about getting into such a situation... Once you're *in* a situation where fighting ability would be useful you're already 80% fucked. But yeah, it's not a negligible chance that you might be able to get away, and even just the ability to remain calm is a good one to have. I got mugged together with my then-girlfriend a few years ago and it wasn't a pleasant experience. I was freaked out for months afterwards and wouldn't go near the place where it happened, and by Joburg standards it was a very mild mugging. No one got hurt and nothing much got taken. But just having someone threaten you and someone you love... very rude. The thing about those kinda things - they happen very quickly and the criminals use the surprise/fear element to keep you off balance. Being able to react quickly to that might be a huge advantage.

I'm so sorry that happened to you Hug

My dad got mugged when he was younger. Someone held a knife to his throat. It's scary business. I got stuck in the Tenderloin in San Francisco at like 1 in the morning. Not a good area to be in--even in daylight. This one drugged out guy kept following me and telling me he could help me get home. He would not go away. He literally followed me for several blocks. It was pretty scary.

Despite some potentially dangerous situations, I do love the excitement and craziness of the city. I just want to feel prepared if need be.

Situational awareness is, by far, the most important aspect of protecting yourself. You could be Bruce Lee and walking around with a grenade launcher. If someone catches you completely unaware and off guard, they win.

So agree Thumbsup The aggressiveness of some of the panhandlers in SF is different than anything I've experienced in any other city I've been to. And I volunteer and help people living on the streets with their pets and have done outreach for things like that, so I'm not uncomfortable around that population of people by any means. But some of the more scary situations I have been in in CA have involved aggressive panhandlers. Other situations have been from random guys who think they can put their hands on you. Wtf. No woman is going to want to talk to a guy who does that. Not one.
