As was mentioned above, there is archeological evidence that a city once existed where Plato described and that city was consumed by the Mediterranean Sea at some point. This could very well have been Atlantis. So, the city itself may have been real. The mythology behind it, however, is probably just that: mythology. But, it stands to reason that the myth could have some truthful origin. And, Atlantis would not be the first ancient city to sink into the sea. Off the coast of Egypt are the ruins of an ancient city. Oceans rise and recede with time, and cities built to close to the shore can suffer the consequences.
