Flames rise from a train derailment in Casselton, North Dakota on December 30th, 2013 Northeast of the explosion on highway 10.

CASSELTON (KFGO-AM) -- We're learning more about the train derailment near Casselton Monday afternoon. BNSF Railroad says a westbound grain train derailed a mile west of Casselton and hit an eastbound train hauling oil on an adjacent track, causing it to derail. It's believed 21 cars caught fire. No one has been hurt.

Firefighters, law officers and BNSF employees have been on the scene since Monday afternoon. The railroad says there were 112 cars in the westbound grain train and 106 cars in the eastbound crude oil train. The majority of cars in both trains were not derailed and many have been pulled away from the derailment location.

BNSF emergency response personnel and specially trained hazmat teams are working with local emergency responders to address the fires and spilled crude oil and says it will work with local officials to assist those impacted by the incident.

Sounds like they are getting it contained. As long as it wasn't as bad as that one last year in Canada. That was some crazy stuff.

Those fireball pictures....

Such beauty. Blush

I just heard this story on Here & Now. Apparently the heat could be felt a mile+ away. And it's a good thing it wasn't right in the middle of a city or something.

Give me your argument in the form of a published paper, and then we can start to talk.

Gee, thanks for letting us know what we already knew.

Gee, thanks for a really useless comment.

No, the OP is useless. Reporting news that is days old from half a world away is useless.

It's news. In the news forum. To be discussed. It's not pretending to be an urgent news flash.

Anyway to further discussion, I wonder what can be done about transporting oil. As much as I'd like, the world is not going to suddenly stop using oil, so how can we get it safely from place to place without risking massive explosions like this? Is there even a less risky option out there?
