I suspect it's about their sense of justice. They're willing to 'turn the other cheek' only because they believe God will hand out some serious retribution.

To be fair to the theists, I admit we all allow our feelings to decide the 'truth' in some areas of life, namely, morals. There's a strong emotional component to what we determine as right or wrong.
Having lost the intellectual debate about the existence of God, the theists turned it into a moral question, 'Is it morally right to believe in God?'.
Perhaps that explains the popularity of the apologists theories about Objective Moral Values? It's not really about rape, murder, or genocide (some of their favorite examples), it's more about their moral perspective on the question of God's existence. That is, having turned the question of God's existence into a moral question they're intent on proving that moral feelings have an objective reality and aren't just evolutionary accidents.
