Bemores annual moan about Christmas....
So its that time of year again.... Time for me to have a moan about how much I fucking hate Christmas.

Growing up I consider myself lucky that I was raised in an atheistic household. Pretty much like all of the people who I know and grew up with.

Nevertheless the story of Jesus and Mary and all that shit was taught to me at school. It was wasted though, it was more like a "history" lesson and the subject could of been any event that just so happened to have took place on 25th December.

Growing up I was also taught, like I imagine all kids in western civilisations are to varying degrees, that Christmas was a time of "good will and charity". However I was not shown this and whatever ways I was, I probably couldn't comprehend it fully as I was more pre-occupied with what I was going to get on Christmas day. That is where my priorities lay and I am sure if you ask Children today what they look forward to most about Christmas day I am sure the vast majorities first choice will be what they are going to receive as presents.

Now im sure many will argue the point that Christmas means many things to many people and I cant disagree with you on that. However the reality is when you remove any "meaning" and just look at our species actions. The vast majority are just buying material possessions, they are consuming en-masse.

Christmas is just about consuming.

I fucking hate Christmas.

I feel so much, and yet I feel nothing.
I am a rock, I am the sky, the birds and the trees and everything beyond.
I am the wind, in the fields in which I roar. I am the water, in which I drown.

You keep this up and you're going to get a visit from 3 spirits.

My only complaint is it's December 24th and it's 70 fucking degrees out. That's not right.

I hate having to listen to that cheery, jangling "holiday music" that they ear-rape you with in all the public spots.....

And I may just start chewing tobacco - just so I can use the Salvation Army's bellfucking ringer's kettle, for a spittoon.........

The one saving grace is that this time next week, all this crass commercialism and phony good cheer will be a thing of the past.

I'm a creationist... I believe that man created God.

Thank the GOP, Koch suckers and big oil. Look how long it took big oil just to take led out of gas. Humans are stupid and greedy.

RE: Bemores annual moan about Christmas....
I don't mind being labelled a Grinch or a Scrooge. I'm not actually against the charitable side, the "goodwill" side of Christmas. Im just sick of the bullshit that it is wrapped up in, that we (humanity) keep repeating.

I am sure many of us have fond memories, myself included of Christmases past where growing up we were given gifts. I am not a parent, so I cannot comment on that "feeling" that parents have, where they describe seeing their children's faces lighting up when they open their presents and they experience momentary happiness through the receiving of these material possessions.

It is the pursuit of these gifts that bother me. I was lucky in that halfway through my childhood my parents both stopped working. My dad was near retirement age and my mum was suffering from a mental illness (depression) so they stopped working and I got to spend time with them, more time than nearly all of my friends who's parents worked. I never used to get as many presents as most of my friends did and at the time I never understood and wished that I did. Now with hindsight I realise that the best "gift" I ever had was the time with them. I would choose time with my parents and my family over any mountain of gifts that one could offer. Yet as a society we work overtime or longer hours, we sometimes get into debt to provide these "gifts" to out children and our loved ones, because Christmas can be expensive.

Life is too short to deny time to your children and loved ones to be lost in the pursuit of buying shitty presents that in reality, you don't actually need. The world wont stop revolving if everybody stopped buying presents. My life would really be no different if I never had any of the toys I did when I was growing up. The toys and gifts I received didn't define who I am today. With hindsight now that we are all adults, if you could somehow go back in time, would you repeat the Christmases that you had or would you maybe turn around and say to your parents/guardians/loved ones...

"There is no need to go through the whole stress and strain of working extra hours, or making sacrifices and get into debt to buy me items, that in years to come, I will no longer possess nor have any need of. I would rather spend quality time with you"

Do you agree with that statement??? Do you see yourself doing exactly what I have said, working longer or harder and sacrificing time now to purchase a moment.... one single fucking moment on Christmas day where people open something (a present) to smile. With hindsight in the grand scheme of things someone please use logic and rationality to explain to me how it is worth it????

As atheists we don't believe in the story that the whole holiday is based upon. Instead we have took what we interpret as the meaning. Which is basically having one day of the year where we get together and be nice to one another. Is it logical to just have one day where we try to be nice and the other 364 days of the year we don't???

Imagine if we had a Christmas every month!!! I'm sure that many of you would say "I cant afford such a thing" or "Its too much stress" but isnt it more logical to try to be nice to one another 12 days a year than just 1???

If we did have a Christmas every month and it would be too expensive to celebrate it as we do now....how would you show your love to someone if you could not buy them a gift???? Have a think about that one, let that roll around your head. How would you show love and that people mean something to you..... because as the saying allegedly goes "Its not the gift, its the thought that counts"

I don't expect everyone to understand what I'm saying. I could keep ranting on an on about the subject. I know that this time of year is special to people, its special to me as I will be spending time with my family. I just think that consumerism has buried any aspect of what Christmas is meant to be about.

Fuck consumerism and fuck trying to buy love. Just give love, show love.

I feel so much, and yet I feel nothing.

Yep, some of us are, no such thing as magic babies with super powers first off, and Saint Nick is a marketing ploy for business.

And also an easy way to brainwash a kid to go from Santa to Jesus. Funny that Easter uses colored eggs to lead kids to worship a torture device.

I find all human holidays silly on a 4 billion year old planet. No you cant get rid of holidays no, but some people make far too much of a production out of it especially when it comes to religion, and not just Christianity, but all religions.
