Best Social Awareness Song
As I posted in the cover songs thread, I really like Ed Sheeran. The radio played one of his first songs, as I was driving home from some errand-running, and it dawned on me that a good thread would be "songs that raise social awareness"... ones that highlight a social problem and/or tell sympathetic stories of the downtrodden.

Three came to mind, right away, but I want to know some of your favorites. I'd also like to know what your favorite lyric(s) are from the song.

First, this one is as appropriate in the wake of the recent elections as it was in the day it was written:

Paranoia strikes deep
Into your life, it will creep
It starts when you're always afraid
If you step outta line,
The Man come to take you away.
You better stop, hey,
What's that sound?
Everybody look what's going down.

And Ed's contribution, from the radio, a song about drug dependence and a girl driven to prostitution and then death:

This song I consider the most important social song of this generation... and whatever you think about hip-hop music, it may have been what finally gave impetus to the final push to get gay marriage legalized. I recommend watching the original video, but I included the live version that features Ed Sheeran. Because Ed.

For those that like the same sex
Have the characteristics--
The right wing conservatives think it's a decision,
And you can be cured with some treatment and religion.
Man-made rewiring of a predisposition,
Playing God, aw nah here we go
America the brave still fears what we don't know.

[...]
With the veil over our eyes
We turn our back on the cause
'Til the day that my uncles can be united by law
When kids aren't walking 'round the hallway plagued by pain in their heart,
A world so hateful some would rather die than be who they are!
And a certificate on paper isn't gonna solve it all,
But it's a damn good place to start.

And I can't change
Even if I tried
Even if I wanted to...
I'm not crying on Sundays,
I'm not crying on Sundays,
I'm not crying on Sundays,
I'm not crying on Sundays.

Youngsters who haven't lived through shit before probably don't realize it's built into the very fabric of our being. You just hunker down and wait it out so as to not end up dead in Ohio.

RE: Best Social Awareness Song
This one's a personal awareness thing. My father, usually a grumbler and mutterer of "kids these days" when Top of the Pops was on the telly, fell silent and a tear welled in his eye when he first heard this.

My father ... an actual fighter of fascists.

"The future teaches you to be alone
The present to be afraid and cold
So if I can shoot rabbits
Then I can shoot fascists

Bullets for your brain today
But we'll forget it all again
Monuments put from pen to paper
Turns me into a gutless wonder

And if you tolerate this
Then your children will be next
[...]
Holes in your head today
But I'm a pacifist
I've walked La Ramblas
But not with real intent

And if you tolerate this
Then your children will be next"

"Southern trees bear a strange fruit
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root
Black bodies swingin' in the Southern breeze
Strange fruit hangin' from the poplar trees

Pastoral scene of the gallant South
The bulgin' eyes and the twisted mouth
Scent of magnolias sweet and fresh
Then the sudden smell of burnin' flesh

Here is a fruit for the crows to pluck
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck
For the sun to rot, for the tree to drop
Here is a strange and bitter crop"

(edit... Girly beat me to it. Shoulda known ;-/ )

It's hard to pick just one of Billy Bragg's songs when pretty much everything is aimed at awareness. Maybe Between The Wars but I think this one had the bigger impact at the time:

"I'm bound to follow my conscience
And do whatever I can
But it'll take much more than the union law
To knock the fight out of a working man

Which side are you on, boys?
Which side are you on?"

I know I've chosen three already but in terms of raising awareness and subsequently shit-loads of money...

"Well, tonight thank God it's them instead of you"

System of a Down.

Pick any song. Drinking Beverage

But now I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma, a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth.

RE: Best Social Awareness Song
I really should have posted this, as well:

But it dawns on me that I really meant MODERN social awareness songs, even though I posted older ones. It makes me wonder, "Where are our popular songwriters, today? Where are the artists who stand up for what is right?"

*sigh*
