I don't really bash when I reply to bible threads, I try to say things that are constructive. I have this belief that some of the world believes it's true. Well, sometimes I'm just blatantly laughing at it, but I live in Missouri I need to get some steam off or it's not a book I'll be bashing.

Also I tend to find the skeptic's annotated bible to be a pretty good place to look at information. Link is to the Qu'ran part.

Thanks, very nice link.

RE: Bible bashing
Since I'm still a relatively new member of the A-Team, I wonder what other topics you would suggest instead of Bible bashing. As someone coming out of the Evangelical Ghetto, I find these highly interesting and they give me the chance to strengthen my arguments, see what works and what doesn't. Or is your rant about bashing in general? I think I get what you're feeling, I just am wondering what you would offer as Bible Bashing's alternative?

I probably wasn't entirely clear.
What I was ranting about was simple bashing of the "look what this book says here - how stupid" variety.
I do like to see more thoughtful or analytic criticism of books of alleged revelation. But will critical analysis convert anyone? My thought is that it may help those already doubting to clarify and ground their doubts and make the transition from superstitious to rational living. I suppose Bible-bashing helped solidify my doubts.

As I said, I was ranting - I think that I don't need any more persuading that none of these holy books contain the Word of God, which is indisputable since there are no gods. No God, no Allah, no Yahweh, no Zeus, no Baal, ... Nor spirits, nor ghosts, nor faeries, nor leprechauns, ...

Oh, ok. Thanks, Chas. This is much more clear. I shouldn't have expected a rant to be completely parsed out. But now that you've raised the subject, I'll ramble a bit:

Critical analysis will most likely not convert anyone on the spot, unless the Holy Spirit has a hand in it. But if there were not critical analysis of the Bible on the internet and in online forums, then I'd have to change my "Hellbound" status back to "Heavenbound" and no one wants that. Ok, my mom wants that. But no one here wants that. (I'd say maybe KC might want that too, but if I'm not elect, I'd hope he'd rather I stay an atheist so I can at least have fun before being consumed in everlasting fire).
Do the Bible debates happen ad nauseum in this forum? Yes. But as for my experience, it's like I've suddenly awakened from a bad dream and I want to absorb everything I can, even if it's an absurd rant about Set and Horus. Even browsing through some old threads that have the same arguments as what we're seeing now, I find helpful information,

I guess it just comes down to our own choice on which thread links we're going to press. If there's a Bible Bashing one, The Right Reverend Erxomai is going to rush in and shoot 'em all and let God sort it out. And in the meantime I'll have some fun re-framing decades of a Conservative understanding of the Bible through my new worldview, and have the chance to practice my arguments for when I'm ready to answer the call and become a missionary for reason.

You atheists conspirators.

But anyway, we're on the same network, so yeah.

Lots of things, really. Did Jesus really exist? Is virgin birth possible? WTF is the Trinity all about? Why are priests and nuns supposed to be celebate? There are lots of topics about religion that could be discussed.

For instance: It's easy to see that the god of the Bible/OT was Yahweh. Yahweh was an invented god, one of many, that is easy to research. So given that Yahweh was invented, which god did Jesus claim to be the son of? Couldn't have been Yahweh, otherwise that would mean that Jesus was invented, and that's just not possible. Tongue

Keep 'em coming!

Wow, excellent! Can you include rationality and logic along with reason?

Thanks!

I appreciate this response and agree with everything...except to interject when it comes to discussing Christianity with a True Believer, you're not going to have a conversation without having a bible in hand and maybe a concordance or BDB nearby. So that brings it back (in my mind) to the discussion being a Bible Bashing thread. I'd bash all over someone who would argue Isaiah and Matthew were talking about the same girl. The argument to expose YHWH as one of several gods and not the only god that requires our worship is found in the Bible...the one I'd want to bash. Smile

All of this is way more attention to the topic than I wanted to stir up. I'm really not trying to argue anything here. I just thought I'd clarify why I was asking the question, when in my mind, these debates (if done with a Christian) have to be done with the bible.

RE: Bible bashing
Chas,

I tend to look for the same thing you are inquiring about. I hate the "this is crazy shit" argument. Like a lawyer I want evidence on my side. And evidence can only be gathered through scientific analysis.

Science easily destroys the validity of the OT and it would be nice to have the same strong arguments against the NT since this is what most Christians lean on. I tend to go down the road of Jesus died for our sins, which were inherited from Adam and Eve, therefore you have to believe in the creation story from the OT. If you reject the creation theory of the OT because of the evidence for the Big Bang and evolution then you must reject the entire book. And rejecting the OT makes the NT and Jesus invalid.

Right ?

That is logical, Captain.

Absolutely, but I also find that believers I've discussed this with seem to short-circuit their logic circuits somewhere toward the end of the syllogism.
