Very interesting. Was there any more than the intro to that report? Could not find it or a link that did not take me to another story.

Why doesn't the black-hole swallow up the lab? Neighborhood? The entire region? The planet?

Yeah, OK, a black hole made of sound. Did it have a horizon of utter silence around it? Shy

Have to accept this is directly analogous to the real thing. But I am sure it will spark new theories and research and that is always a great idea (well, perhaps "mostly", we'll ignore weapons.)

...because it actually wasnt an real black hole.

What they created was a "situation/environment" (which they claim is) comparable to the environment near the event horizon of a black hole.

They say an event horizon compares to a bow shock where you have supersonic material inside which is rapidly slowed down to subsonic speed (relative to the medium) outside. It looks like they reversed that flow, from the outisde to the inside and did so with a laser.
Quote:We created the analog of a charged black hole in our previous work41. We found experimentally that a potential step (a “waterfall” potential) is an excellent technique for accelerating an atomic condensate to well above the speed of sound, as required for creating the horizons

Quote:Specifically, a transition from subsonic flow to supersonic flow is analogous to a black hole event horizon, since sound traveling against the flow cannot exit the supersonic region
...which is analogous to matter not being able to "leave" the black hole via the event horizon

Ironically they created an environment quite opposite to the balck hole´s, in order to condcut their experiment.
Quote:In order to test this theory, we have created a narrow, low density, very low temperature atomic Bose-Einstein condensate, containing an analog black hole horizon and an inner horizon, as in a charged black hole

So what they observed wasnt actually hawking radiation, but something they compared it with in a comparative, modeled scenario. This radiation was self-amplifiying and resulted in being a LASER (created by the original laser which was used to set up the whole "black hole").

Meh, we already have a huge black hole in America, it's called Donald Trump.
