I think they knew BEFORE they even sent him over there he was a nut and a risk.
He should be given a mental health discharge, and leave it at that. The screw-up is with the system that allowed him to go in the first place, not blame the guy after he did what they should have known he was going to do. Fucking fat-ass arm chair generals.
what? Now it is the generals' fault not Bergdahl's? I certainly haven't read his psychological evaluation (nor would I really be qualified to pass judgment on it if I had it in my hands) but a grown man appears to have deserted his post. I think that action speaks for itself.

If you want to throw out "no man left behind" that's fine. I'd wonder how the actual service line interpreted that in light of desertion. Even if it applied equally I don't think anyone would think that 5 ring leaders for a deserter is fair trade. How about a generator, 200 lbs of grain and a carton of cigs for his ass so that we can put him on trial. I certainly wouldn't offer anything that could be used against the people who he deserted (e.g. a combatant).

I know nothing, and care nothing about a trade. The fact is, he was mentally unstable and that was well known before he ever went over. People that are mentally ill cannot be held to the same standard sane people are. THAT is the damn system's fault. They should have known he might crimp, and yes the brass can be called to account for that.

Insufferable know-it-all.Einstein God has a plan for us. Please stop screwing it up with your prayers.

Baaaa.

You're missing the big picture here. First Bergdahl gets his day in court under the UCMJ as is appropriate and we get to mete out any justice he deserves. Second, instead of having to house and feed the 5 scumbags we get to track them until they are in close proximity to a high-value target and then take them both out in a drone attack. Win-win.

How did you come by this information? I am obliged to report it to my superiors.

Well, so much for "innocent until proven guilty" and "leave no man behind"?

If Obama and Co. had brought him back and said "we don't leave anyone behind" and acknowledged there were issues with him, I don't know there would have been a whole lot of scrutiny. Yes, there would have been complaints over the trade, but that is fair because the trade is questionable. But, just bringing him back? I doubt it. The Republicans knew the administration was trying to free him and none of them raised a peep about him being accused of desertion (they most likely didn't know).

So, what happened? They gave 5 murderous scumbags for this guy, hailed him as a hero, and now they have to prosecute him. What total goat fuck.

I'm all for innocent until proven guilty. But, don't they way this was handled was ridiculous. And, trading 5 potential murderers for a guy you are now going to prosecute seems very stupid.

Quote:America doesn't negotiate with terrorists, or so I thought.

Sure we do. Why even your Saint Reagan did a great job of it.

Quote:Two days later, Reagan met with his advisors at the White House, where a new plan was introduced. This one called for a slight change in the arms transactions: instead of the weapons going to the "moderate" Iranian group, they would go to "moderate" Iranian army leaders.[36] As the weapons were delivered from Israel by air, the hostages held by Hezbollah would be released.[36] Israel would continue to be reimbursed by the United States for the weapons. Though staunchly opposed by Secretary of State George Shultz and Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger, the plan was authorized by Reagan, who stated that, "We were not trading arms for hostages, nor were we negotiating with terrorists"

But f course that is exactly what the senile old cocksucker was doing.

How come you forgot that?

Well, a few things to consider. Those 5 'murderous scumbags' cannot have been all that murderous if we were either unable or unwilling to bring them to trial for their crimes. Indefinite detention without trial is not justice. If we had the evidence, they should have been put on trial to face the charges arrayed against them. If we lacked such evidence, then what did we really lose, in exchange for one of our own?

Also the idea of prisoner exchange is that we'd want him back with us, because even if he did do something wrong we'd want him to experience American justice and be tried by his peers. You know, back when American justice was less of an international laughing stock. That was also before the kind of bullshit partisan politics that has the Republicans shutting down the government for spite and becoming pen-pals with the Iranians to undermine the President and torpedo nuclear nonproliferation talks. So who knows how much of this is being fueled by political head-hunting.

Also, if he really was unfit for service, then who's at fault for placing him in that situation? The military needs bodies, recruitment offices have quotas to meet. If the system cut corners and let him slide, it seems wrong to burn him for the mistakes of others within the system.
