California Cross coming down
California Landmark Cross ordered to come down in 90 days

every time I see these articles it makes me feel like the US has taken a baby step in the right direction. And WTF happened in the 1950's? Seems like when God got plastered all over America……on the money, in the pledge, statues…. sheesh.

RE: California Cross coming down
I'm not quite that old to know the 'mood of America' in the 1950's, and I'm not much of a history person…..(unless the tv shows Happy Days and Laverne & Shirley count). Hoping someone here could shed some light on the topic for me.

I'm curious how these things survived the 60's & 70's, when there were so many other changes going on. I'm surprised these things weren't challenged then. Huh

Even I am not old enough to know about the mood in those times. The war had just been won, was there a "praise the lord" phase after that?

Amidst the constant fucking, I think so.

I'm a little torn on this one. This cross was put in place over fifty years ago, replacing one that had been there since 1913. So there's been a cross there for a hundred years, and just now we need to tear it down?

I dunno, almost feels like burning a church.

But now I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma, a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth.

The establishment clause predates both crosses and has done far more to advance society. It doesn't matter that they did it 100 years ago it is still unconstitutional, and it was as much then as it is now. The only difference is now more people are willing to speak up.

RE: California Cross coming down
on the wikipedia page (I know…I know)….it sounds like this cross has been doomed from the get-go.

Quote:Three differently shaped Christian crosses have been constructed since 1913 on City government property at the apex of Mt. Soledad (Mt. Soledad Natural Park) in the community of La Jolla.

The original wooden cross on Mt. Soledad was erected in 1913 by private citizens living in La Jolla and Pacific Beach, but was stolen in 1923; later that year it was affixed back in the ground in Mt. Soledad Natural Park and later burned.

The second cross was erected in 1934 by a private group of Protestant Christians from La Jolla and Pacific Beach. This sturdier, stucco-over-wood frame cross was blown down by blustery winds in 1952.

The third cross, 29 feet (9 m) tall on top of a 14-foot (4 m)-tall stepped platform, was installed in 1954. It still stands today. A windstorm damaged one of the flimsily constructed cross members in 1955 and the concrete structure had to be repaired.

Here's a photo. Its on the highest point in La Jolla overlooking the town.
