Carl Sagan on the decline of scientific literacy
I just ran across this interview between Carl Sagan and Charlie Rose from 1996. What a brilliant, thoughtful, and articulate man he was. So true his comments about science. All you have to do is go to a book store and right in the front you'll see shelf after shelf after shelf on religion and if your lucky two sections in the back of the store will be dedicated to science.

Let's make sure this changes. Wink

I just purchased two books: Cosmos by Sagan and Fourteen Billion Years of Cosmic Evolution by Neil deGrasse Tyson to further my knowledge of our universe. I just love this stuff.

Ooh... Neil de Grasse Tyson... I adore him.... and his big, fat brain. Blush

Check out the elegant nature of science thread, if you haven't already. It's probably my favorite thread on the forum.
Numerous videos there - I put one up recently which was kind of like a "fun with science" thing. It was a hoot. Smile

Kim, the fact that we are the only two commenting on this thread seems to illustrate Sagan's point.

False. Big Grin

I've been in love with Sagan's work for years now - he's the one who got me down the path of my adoration of science and the universe.

Branching off my love for Sagan, I've found Neil, Dawkins, Feynman, and a plethora of others. I'm only 17 and I plan on getting my PhD in Astronomy, and I'll do my best to increase scientific literacy, because after all... "When you're scientifically literate the world looks very different to you" (Neil deGrasse Tyson).

"Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known." - Carl Sagan
