There is a middle position; that the Jesus of the Bible is a conflation of more than one prophet. The stories are more than embellishments.

Ehrman doesn't believe he was anything other than just a guy. He believes the miracle stories were conflated(?) with other stories of so-called magicians and mystery cultists.

EDIT: It's just his position that Jesus did exist, but not the Jesus of the Bible.
