RE: Causing offense.
I take "I'm offended" to be the cue to do whatever the "offending" action is more. In that book example, I'd make sure to hold the thing up to that the cover was fully visible, and maybe start reading aloud in a whisper.

Alternatively, play their game. "Your shoes offend me, take them off".

Popcorn I put more thought into fiction than theists put into reality.

What would you say in that situation??

Put it away ... ? Like in a brown paper sack? Blink

Preaching in public is offensive... as is trying to be a manipulative, control freak to strangers.

If someone came up to me and advised me to put any book "under wraps", offensive or otherwise, I'm tempted to say that "Mind your own business." might be a proper response. However, I'd rather tell such a person that it's a really good book they might want to check out, and leave it at that.

If they persisted, I'd be forced to tell them to piss off. I really don't care for rude, manipulative, control freaks. Shy

I'd be likely to be innocent and sweet.

"Oh, you haven't read it yet? It's an amazing book! Just listen to this: " (reads aloud from book)".

I would say that if they tried to forcefully remove it I could sue their weakminded ass to oblivion. Then I would tell them fuck off and go deepthroat the manhood of christ.

Or I'd probably just roll my eyes and continue reading.

"You're offended? Good! Maybe you'll even be motivated enough to read the book you're offended by."

....but then I'd screw it all up by saying something nasty like"...oh, never mind. I forgot....words is hard." in my best offensive redneck voice.

'Go fuck yourself' should do nicely.
