Never comfortable enough to admit it, and the conversation was never brought up, so I never defined my beliefs. 6 years ago, my uncle passed away, and 5 years prior, my grandpa (his father) passed away. Both were huge Notre Dame Fighting Irish fans (for those that don't know, a largely catholic school). Even with my doubts on religion at the time, I decided on a Celtic cross as the base of my memorial tattoo for the both of them.

5 years later, I'm an admitted atheist, with an unfinished memorial tattoo with a Celtic cross on my back. I feel like a walking advertisement for hypocricy every day. Any suggestions for altering (coverup no option), fixing, or at the very least, making me feel better about the only tattoo I regret?

Get " In loving memory to ( who they were ) written underneath the cross. That we people will KNOW its a memorial thing and not a religious one.

I have a similar problem. I was brainwashed with religion, and so when I turned 18 I got a tattoo of a cross, with the thinking "oh i'll never hate god.'

Then, my eyes were opened, and 8 years later, I still have a cross tat on my shoulder. My current thinking is to not cover it up, but get the Atheist Scarlet Letter "A" tattooed over it.

I think this would bring meaning to it. It has faded, and no way would I ever touch it up--and a bold, red "A" would symbolize my transition out of religion.

Might be kind of cool to cover it with the A but not a complete cover to show the transition from religion to atheism. Allow the cross to still show even if it is kind of a shadow or a darker area, if that makes sense.

See here they are the bruises some were self-inflicted and some showed up along the way. - JF

I like that idea as well. Just have the cross as a backdrop for the A... Could turn out really good if done right
